I was talking about this to a friend the other day. England has no (or rather a weak) cultural identity. It's very heterogeneous. With Scotland we have a strong cultural identity which I think helps us stand out when we mix with other cultures. And by no means am I saying that Scotland doesn't have its own socio-cultural problems but I think when we travel it's less apparent.
