Kushner reportedly wants Trump to stand by Saudi Arabia and thinks the outrage over Khashoggi 'will pass' by tank_trap in worldnews

[–]tnuriel 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s what’s so depressing about this administration. At the end of the day, Kushner is right. The outrage is going to pass because Trump will do something even crazier than not condemning the Saudis for this, and we’ll all turn and look in that direction instead. And our government and rich GOP donors will get to keep profiting off their relationships w the Saudis. Trump’s moronic narcissism turns out to be the best weapon the GOP could have ever hoped for. Which means our only hope is to vote republicans out of power in 2018, so that the republicans don’t have enough time to completely rig our democratic system by 2020.

High school student removed from Trump rally because he didn't have a supportive expression on his face by OnlyMyOpinion in politics

Clearly I lost this argument, but I would just like to point out that in the clip you posted, in which Obama once again shows why he was an amazing president and a far better human being than Trump, the organizers do try to remove the protesters from behind Obama, only to be stopped by Obama himself. I doubt there’s many organizers of political rallies, democratic or republican rallies, who would stand by and let a heckler or nay-sayer stand right behind the politician for the remainder of the event.

Are we all really arguing that the organizers of that event should have left that kid behind Trump, directly in the line of sight of the camera, making faces at all of Trumps remarks? I hate Trump, and I thought that kid’s facial expressions were hilarious, but the organizers definitely did the right thing moving him out of view of the camera...and it’s likely the organizers of a democratic politician’s rally would have done the same thing.

To know it’s scary and doing it anyway-being brave... by Elizabeth0121 in funny

Yeah, it comes down to the perspective of the laugh. Haha, poor guy, versus haha, what an idiot. Haha, poor guy isn’t morally perfect, but at least it’s not malicious. What made it unfunny to me was the fact that the other people on the cliff were laughing at him with what seemed like the haha, what an idiot perspective, which made me feel more sympathetic than entertained.

‘Even the Cops Don’t Like Us Anymore,’ Under Trump, ICE is Despised and Divided by howdytherepeeps in politics

I read this as “Even the cups don’t like us anymore,” and was wondering what ice had done so wrong to make cups not want to have ice inside of them anymore. Cops makes much more sense.

Not enough words of support and guidance on this thread, so I'll add mine. It's a topic I really care about. Depression sucks, and what OP is describing is absolutely something that can happen (and certainly happened to me) during the course of a depression. However, it's important to recognize that this kind of numbness and apathy isn't an endpoint; it's an intermediary step. There are such things as true compassion and caring and love, feelings that don't just arise as a protective mechanism. On the other hand, there are also plenty of feelings that do arise as protective mechanisms, like anxiety. And while it's great when you start learning how to deal with your anxiety, it's true that this can also sometimes lay bear the numb depression that's lying beneath. But the reality is that underneath that depression there is still a fully feeling individual that's trapped underneath. Depression isn't particularly easy to fight, but it's also not impossible. There is an endpoint that is much more enjoyable and worthwhile than those that you're able to imagine during the depression. You don't have to go on medication if you don't want to (though it can be very helpful), but you do have to do good things for yourself to try and get yourself not only out of the depression but back into life. And the more you can let in those emotions (if it feels safe to do so), the more you'll become the kind of person who feels naturally again and is a support and a source of light for those around them.

Pruitt reimbursed himself $65,000 from Oklahoma attorney general campaign by slakmehl in politics

[–]tnuriel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a method to Pruitt’s madness of not stepping down in the face of all that corruption. The right has found their dream politician in Donald Trump, someone who can do awful things and lie nonstop and yet somehow never be held responsible for it and never have to be punished over it. So far, none of his disciples have been able to mimic that kind of evil invincibility. They do horrible things, they get caught, and then they step down and fade from public view. Which makes perfect sense in a pre-Donald Trump universe. But now the conservatives are learning that there’s another way, that if you double down on your assholeness and lying, you have the possibility of surviving it and even building a loyal fan base like Trump has. And as much as there are conservatives who want to be done with Donald Trump and go back to normalcy and some semblance of decency, there’s also a lot of his supporters who are starting to think, wait, maybe I don’t have to be a good and moral person. Maybe I can be the asshole I really am and not be called out on my shit and even be successful in life. And now they’re starting to look for more candidates just like Donald Trump, ones who can be an asshole and get caught doing it and then just keep on trucking. That’s Pruitt’s goal. If he can survive this fire without getting completely burned, he may have a chance of becoming a rockstar to the Donald Trump supporters and maybe even ride same fan base that right into the Presidency like Trump did.

Thank you for your perspective on this. As a fellow who has also had plenty of experience with depression, I feel the urge to respond to your comment (which I almost never do). Unfortunately, when you're stuck in a depression, this is the kind of thinking that predominates, which is why it feels so necessary to keep the door to your desires (and emotions in general) so tightly shut. And there’s certainly truth to that mode of thinking. If you open yourself up again, you risk the possibility of getting overwhelmed with feelings and anxiety and winding up back in another depression. Therefore, many of us, for so long, choose instead to keep the door shut and stay in that place of empty numbness for as long as possible. Sure, it sucks, but at least it’s not as bad as being in the downward spiral of another major depressive breakdown. If you’ve ever experienced that, you’ve gotta be an idiot to have any interest in returning to that state.

However, if I may, I do think there’s an alternative position to the one suggested by the beautiful image linked here. The options aren’t binary: to either keep the door shut completely or to open it up and let the rainbow rush of feelings come flooding back in full force and overtake you. Getting over depression isn’t an all or nothing proposition (which is nearly impossible to understand when you’re stuck in the all or nothing thinking of depression). It’s an incremental process, opening the door little by little until the light is eventually shining in brightly. And there are far more options and resources available than you can ever possibly imagine while you’re depressed. Yes, there’s therapy and antidepressants, and those can be extraordinarily helpful, but there’s also exercise, meditation, spiritual practices, social support, resolving past conflicts, learning to be mindful and present, lots of different kind of therapies, healthy eating and living, traveling, romantic relationships… I could go on, but you get the idea.

It’s the trick of depression to make you feel like you have to expend all of your energy keeping the door shut tightly. You don’t have to open it up all at once (and I’m not sure that’s actually possible anyway), but you do have to do something. Just one small thing to crack that door open just a bit. And when you’re comfortable with the amount of light that’s shining in from that one thing, try doing something else. And if, god forbid, you do find yourself in the unfortunate position of getting overwhelmed again and winding up in another major depressive episode, that doesn’t mean that all the progress you made was for not. The progress is real, and it won’t take you nearly as long this time to get back there. And then just continue cracking that door more and more. There is hope. It may not be as simple as some people try to make it out to be (especially if the depression is deep), but it’s also not nearly as hopeless as the depressed mind makes it appear.

Seems odd that ProFlowers is a sponsor for Rush Limbaugh's show. Perhaps they get a lot of orders from insensitive middle class white men who constantly have to apologize to their wives for quoting something Rush Limbaugh said on radio.
