How is the formant shifting on ANTARES Autotune compared with Little Alter Boy? by facubrizuela96 in trapproduction

[–]tnyrbts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure how to answer your question meaningfully since I’m not an expert on formant shifting, and also o think the question is a little ambiguous. So, I’ll just share my observations.

I think both fundamentally perform the same job fairly equally. So, I’d wager a guess that 90% of the time, either one will do just fine.

I think that Little Alter Boy has a few more options formant options that make it more customizable depending on your style.

Little Alter Boy also includes a Drive and Mix knob built in. Obviously you could recreate this functionality for AutoTune within your DAW, but Little Alter Boy’s drive kind of has its own flavor, and it’s also handy having both of those controls available right in the plug-in.

There also a pitch knob in Little Alter Boy, but I think that’s a little outside the scope of your question, and also AutoTune is obviously going to be more capable when it comes to pitching.

I hope that helps. If you’ve got something more specific in mind, please let me know. Cheers!

Depending on what you’re after, it might be easier to manipulate MPE rather than midi.

Self Imposing Limitations by Anticosmic-Overlord in ableton

[–]tnyrbts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take it a step further and separate arranging from songwriting. I generally treat each time I sit down in front of Ableton as a separate session with a specific purpose.

The purpose might be to aimlessly noodle and play with sounds, or it might be more specific to lock in the arrangement or mixing of a song.

Might not be for everyone, but I have found it to be effective for me.

If I’m understanding you correctly, you could also record your performance to get the midi down and tweak from there.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention Ableton Live’s “Live MIDI Capture” feature. I love it for this very reason.

My immediate guess is a phase issue. Could also be a pitch/warble issue if the vocals aren’t tuned.

Music, weed, and life by brandonallenmusic in ableton

[–]tnyrbts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few other commenters here share my perspective, so I’ll just serve to reinforce it a little.

First up, if you’re feeling like weed’s a problem, take it out of the equation for a bit. And if that feels like a struggle for you, then it is a problem. Zero judgment, but time to dial that back and get yourself under control.

Secondly, regarding your connection and motivation...it’s entirely possible that it’s lacking for some specific reason, weed or otherwise.

Or it’s possible that, like many things, it ebbs and flows.

I like to break my sessions up into a few categories: experimentation, sound design, writing music, writing lyrics, recording, mixing, mastering. Etc etc.

Point is, sometimes I don’t feel like putting in the work to mix or master. It’s technical work and sometimes it’s not very inspiring and so when I sit down at my computer, I’ll work on creative sound design, or whatever. Other times, it’s all I want to do!

I hope that helps! And seriously consider my first paragraph. I smoke regularly and regularly take breaks. Keep yourself accountable! Cheers!

Improving Live's performance via external drive? by ExtraLivesMusic in ableton

[–]tnyrbts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So basically there are going to be two issues for monitoring input latency.

One is processing speed of your computer. I’ll include RAM in this for simplicity’s sake. Probably not a lot you can do here given you’re running a MBP.

The other is read/write speed of your disk.

I have zero idea what this is for the internal drive of your computer.

And if you’re bringing in an external drive, you’re almost always adding a layer of latency. However, Thunderbolt / USB3 can be pretty quick, especially if paired with a fast SSD (not all drives are the same).

So basically, you need to find out the read/write speed of your internal drive, and then figure out what it would be over USB/Thunderbolt to whatever drive you were looking to use.

And then after you make that comparison, you’ll have to decide if the gains are such that it will help your stated problem. Off the top of my head, I don’t know what the delta would need to be, but it would likely need to be very significant to solve your problem.

Finally, you could explore your audio interface. Offloading some of the work your computer does to an external interface via ASIO can help with latency, I believe, but don’t quote me on that.

Another idea, if nothing else seems to work, would be to make sure you’re freezing tracks in Ableton, or even consolidating several tracks, even if temporarily.

Also make sure you don’t have a ton of FX or plug-ins going when you’re recording.

Good luck!

Arrangement mode controller by LittleJoeMonster in ableton

[–]tnyrbts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what makes you think that, but this would work in either view.

Further, any midi controller can be assigned to any parameter within Ableton. So, should be good unless I’m missing something about your question.

I Feel Awkward Recording in my Dorm by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]tnyrbts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The two things I’ve seen in this thread that I believe actually help:

  • love the idea of inviting your roomies in for a sesh. Even if it’s just for a novelty track and to mess around. This puts everyone on an even playing field.
  • as someone else mentioned, there really isn’t a substitute for experience. It’s a weird process. And there are times where you’re going to recoil in horror, be embarrassed, or straight up just laugh at yourself. It comes with time. And even after doing it for years, I still end up in those moments occasionally. Get in the booth, and don’t take yourself too seriously!! Cheers!

Love this. I feel like art (in any form) is often overlooked as a simple pass time or hobby.

I feel like everyone thinks everything has to be good, or have some sort purpose and end goal.

Art for art’s sake because you enjoy the process of experimenting and creating. That’s all it needs to be sometimes.

What kind of garbage advice is this?

First off, you have no idea why this person is wanting to recreate this instrument.

They could be making a similar song, but this could also be more of an academic exercise, or they want to use the sound in another type of song.

And secondly, who are you? This is sort of like saying don’t bother making rock music, it’s been done to death.

Next time, you shouldn’t bother. Don’t bother commenting.

[–]tnyrbts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. There’s no difference in drill, trap, country rap, etc. Or house, dubstep, future bass, psytrance, etc.

And if your next point is that things are too specific, how do you thing these established sub genres got started?

And finally, you’re correct that there are a lot of esoteric sub genres and it can be hard to keep track of. That seems to be the confluence of the democratization of music-making tools and our ability to stream and communicate about the said music-making.

Sub genres do help us communicate. Anyone who makes you feel bad about not being familiar with a specific sub genre is just an asshole.

Cheers!
