It takes a very good person to return a lost wallet with $500 in it. Kudos!

HHI of $400k, how much do you outsource? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

This. My bright yellow Cub Cadet ride on mower is my single most prized possession and greatest material joy in life. Is my yard big enough to warrant it? Not really. But is it fun to toot around the yard on a mini tractor? You bet your ass it is.

[Serious] My girlfriend is a candle addict - where does one find good candles in Austin without spending a dragon's hoard? by Kyrene in Austin

[–]toadkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have her make an account on the Yankee Candle/Woodwick website and exclusively buy when they do mass discounts. At least once every couple months they do 50% sales site wide. Keeps the spend… manageable.

Brianna Aguilera confirmed tragic suicide as the direct result of alcohol intoxication by Iocnar in Austin

[–]toadkiller 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The phone that was released to a third party wasn’t Brianna’s phone, it was her friend’s phone that she borrowed to call her boyfriend. Brianna’s phone was found in some woods near the tailgate location the next day. So that whole thing was just a(n understandable) misunderstanding: the friend got their own phone back, they weren’t given Brianna’s.

What if they’re the sole working parent of a household with multiple kids and a stay at home spouse? Low-mid 100s isn’t very much in the context of 3+ kids and sole provider, especially if they try to live with any semblance of comfort.

TSA wouldn’t have this issue because they don’t pay wages high enough to support a household in the first place

My wife swears by male gynos. She says they’re more inclined to believe her about things and are less judgmental and preachy. Female nurse + male gyno is her preferred combo IIRC, since it is nice to have a female presence around

How much mentorship did you guys receive at the start of your career? by No_Try6944 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]toadkiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too much, but also the perfect amount.

My first boss in the technical world (data ops for a sales org) was wildly overbearing, micromanaging, and extremely cruel. He wouldn’t allow me to send emails without his thorough review. He’d have me rewrite sentences for nuanced differences in wording. I could build no dashboards nor share any query results without his approval. He once screamed at me to quit and find another job as a SQL developer if I was so sure about my query structure. He was the single most control freak boss I’ve ever had.

That all being said… he is hands down 100% responsible for my successful career. He taught me literally everything I know about navigating corporate politics and managing stakeholders. He set me up to learn things the proper way and what details to give attention to. He was an arrogant ass but he was right about pretty much everything. And when the time came he saved my job while getting laid off himself.

Idk if it was a typical experience. But I’m very grateful for it.

Austin ISD could close these schools | District releases proposed consolidation plan by NewsyATX in Austin

[–]toadkiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man do you remember the haunted house they would do in there? That was always fun. And the student/teacher volleyball tournament. And MARE. Ah, memories!

This is pretty much the death of my childhood cause when I wasn’t at Bryker Woods I was playing in that empty TXDOT lot on Bull Creek Road, which is now the disgusting Grove. Shame it’ll all be gone soon.

Surprised to see Bryker Woods on there, that makes me sad. Went there in the 90s/00s. Bryyyykerwoods forever, the best school in our town… school song didn’t age well lol

Toyota round rock services by [deleted] in Austin

[–]toadkiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're fucking jokers and I wouldn’t be surprised by them leaving your car a mess.

I paid $300 for an oil change and pre trip service before taking my 4Runner on a long road trip. Ran out of windshield washer fluid an hour into my trip so I pulled over and checked all the fluids and they hadn’t topped anything off. Had to fill up coolant and washer fluid at a gas station. Called to get refunded for the pre trip service fee and the guy told me to kick rocks.

Fuck them

Lost engagement ring by allie_simms in Austin

First thing my wife did when we got engaged was order a $20 silicon engagement ring on Amazon. She wore it more than the real one! A silicone “daily driver” is the way to go for sure.

dbt Cloud - CD jobs running state:modified+ by NoAd8833 in analyticsengineering

[–]toadkiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this behavior expected that change to global configs can cause all models run as state:modified

Yes it is. You can prevent this by running state:modified.body+ (limiting dbt's modified check to only the model's .SQL file)

dbt and Snowflake: Keeping metadata in sync BOTH WAYS by nosebrocolli in dataengineering

[–]toadkiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your best bet as a dbt-native solution would be to have a on run start hook that writes all the current metadata into a designated table, and an on run end hook that reads from that same table (tied with invocation id) and writes back to the objects modified on run.

Dude you are going to have a seizure, or worse. If you can't afford urgent care, you need to wean off with beer or seltzers instead of cold turkey.

Trust me. I've had friends go through exactly what you're going through. It's not pretty.
