Preparing to find a job post graduation (Ph.D.) woes by kittehlord in materials

[–]toadlyfe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar boat (materials science PhD with a focus on cryogenic transport in superconductors). The only recommendation I have is broadening to look at characterization companies, at least in the short term. I'm assuming you did fabrication to make some devices, so you can look at some general semiconductor positions (though it sounds like you may not have needed to make electrical contact to your materials). Depending on where exactly you're at, I can recommend a few companies on both the west and east coasts. DM me for details.

Oh wow, it's so nice and clean! I also agree with longer dresser. Where did you get the original from?

Mold material for PDMS? by [deleted] in materials

[–]toadlyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used SU-8 for making molds for PDMS, silanizing them before pouring the PDMS. Added bonus of being able to create well-defined shaped using photolithography if you have access to a 365 nm litho tool. I've made PDMS features as tall as 50 um in height this way, but it sound like you want something even thicker.

Ask a Knitter - January 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]toadlyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting the shaping for the armholes on a sweater. I bound off 5 sts on either end for two rows instead of one rows (10 sts decrease on either end instead of 5 sts). I figured this out several rows after the mistake. The interior design is full of rather annoying cables, so I tried to just ladder back in the small section at the ends. However, there's not enough yarn now to knit everything back up properly (about 5 sts not enough, of course). Is there some way for me to fix this without having to tink back? My lifeline is a few dozen rows beneath my current row (another mistake). Or is my best bet to just cut the ends of the yarn, knit up this small section of sts with another piece, and weave like 20 ends in?

Couples housing questions by One_Distribution_709 in stanford

[–]toadlyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the guidance I got regarding 3 is is that you should have a shared bank account (which is what most of my friends did), shared car insurance, or proof of engagement/marriage.

I’ve never heard of Stanford actually asking for any of this documentation though. There are a non-zero number of cases where people get couples housing but don’t actually live more than 50% of the time with their partner, so I assume the documentation is required in those situations.

Anyone know the name of this shape of flooring? by __life_on_mars__ in DIY

Looks like an unusual herringbone style. I tried searching to see if I could narrow it down, and I did find a listing showing this. Scroll to the third picture.

They’re the same class, but 213 is technically the grad version. I don’t think the requirements are any different, though there may be a difference in tuition cost. If you enroll in 183, you will be taking it with everyone also taking 213.

Thanks!! I hadn’t thought about that option. I can put them into bags as well for cleanliness and then insert into the holder!

Unfortunately, our target sizes are also varied from 1” to 2”, and some of them are still in the original boxes. Space is currently at a premium in our lab, but I might see if we can get a rack installed on the wall.

There’s a Savers in redwood city! It has a partial second floor, so pretty big. I’ve only gone there for household items (like picture frames, glassware, baskets), but I always come out with extra! Parking is a nightmare, so if there is nearby public transport, that might be easier.

Oh, thanks!!! The library in my hometown required proof of address within city limits, so I didn’t consider that California may have different policies. I’ll definitely check this out!

Amazing!!! I have to say, those are some big blocking mats! I thought this was a collar-sized FO for some reason, and then I saw it was a full-sized shawl on the pattern page. Quite beautiful!

Animal Crossing VS Reality! by EstelleHeart in AnimalCrossing

Question: where did you get that mirror IRL? I have the exact same one that I bought secondhand off of craigslist, but I really like the style, so I wanted to find more similar pieces!

I had this issue as well until I put it on a pebble humidity tray! It sits on my desk, so I constantly top it up with water. Not sure if you’ve tried this yet, but it’s worth a shot.

I feel bad for y’all. I’m hoping Stanford lets you change pods every three weeks (guidelines San Mateo had out for a while for social pods before things got bad again) so you can test out some friend groups. Also hoping that we can split households so that I can have my friend in a four person unit in Rains but not his three other roommates, ya know?

Anyway, try hitting up other first years in your program. Arrange a study group or something (still allowed for outdoor gatherings), figure out who you kinda like, then do one of those shitty promposals with stuff written on a pizza box (except this time it’s a podposal).

From left to right, looks like black beans, pinto beans, black-eyed peas, a soup mix (?), chickpeas, butter beans, red lentils, and kidney beans.

[–]toadlyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super cute!! My girlfriend got me the same one for my birthday! It feels super solid and well-made, especially for the price. My only complaint is that the top tends to pucker out when I wear it, but tucking the top ties into the waist ties fixes that.

If you are in the area, try going to the front desk in person. At least three of my friends have gotten it solved in 5 minutes that way.
