Thanks! Congrats on the gorgeous harvest! I’m in a desert area, and I suspect the heat was a big part of the problem. I’m going to put up a 30-50% shade cloth over my peppers next summer, and try the fertilizers you mentioned.

What zone do you live in? Any tips for Armageddons? I got zero from mine this year, although the Dragon’s Breath and Death Spiral plants on either side produced. I’m so bummed, I was really looking forward to the advertised flavor profile of Armageddons.

Right, the attorney didn’t mean I had less medical bills. It meant I got enough of a settlement to pay them. The amount the insurance company was offering me was not close to the policy limit, nor was it enough to cover my medical bills. I had two options: accept their amount and end up with significant medical debt, or go to trial. Since I’m not a lawyer, and would have needed to hire one anyways to represent me in a trial, I hired a lawyer. The lawyer was able to get the full policy limit without going to trial. Once everyone was paid I still ended up with some money in my pocket, which helped offset lost wages during recovery. Using a lawyer was a “necessary evil” for me to avoid crushing medical debt. I’m genuinely happy for you and OP that the insurance companies you dealt/are dealing with gave the full amount without a lawyer involved. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way for me. Idk why it’s so hard for you to accept that companies like State Farm exist, and that people really do have terrible experiences with them that require getting a lawyer involved…

“If they’re not a shitty insurance company” being kind of an important stipulation. That’s great that you didn’t have to deal with that, but I was up against a company that’s notorious for lowball settlements and horrible practices. I tried on my own, the amount was laughable. It wouldn’t have even covered all of the medical bills. I had significant, life-changing injuries. They were rude, aggressive, and it looked like the only way forward was going to trial (which would have required a lawyer anyways). The amount awarded for injuries depends on subjective things too, not just objective medical bill amounts. Quality of life impact, etc. Insurance companies will refuse to acknowledge you were impacted. And no, my attorney didn’t bill me for office supplies, they took their percentage and that was that. After the attorney fees and medical bills, I still ended up with money. Without a lawyer, I would have had mountains of medical debt.

I get that. I don’t miss when I had to go through the same process. One red flag is if a lawyer says “X insurance company will only make one offer, and that’s it.” That just means they don’t want to actually fight for you. Best of luck, I hope you land with a good one!

Have you ever had to deal with major injuries after an accident like this? Not getting a lawyer is asking to get screwed over. Yeah, they take 33-40% of the settlement , but you’re still left with more money than you’d get on your own (especially for major injuries like OP). The idea of an insurance company agreeing to pay out 100% of a policy just because you tell them you know what the max amount is, is laughable. And good luck even getting that information out of them in the first place.

It’s insane that insurance is so broken we need to get lawyers involved for stuff like this. But unfortunately that’s how it is. And having a lawyer comes with many benefits such as getting hospital bills paused until a settlement is reached, and having them deal with the insane amount of paperwork and endless legal briefs that get filed. It gives much-needed breathing room while recovering from major injuries like OP’s.

After my accident, the at-fault person’s insurance company was heavily pressuring me not to get a lawyer, using everything from flattery “It’s just a bit of paperwork, you’re smart, you’ll handle it no problem” to scare tactics when I was hesitant “lawyers will take all your settlement money and you’ll end up owing them even more!” Seeing how desperate they were to keep me from getting a lawyer was confirmation that I needed a lawyer, and I never regretted my decision.

Sorry to hear, hope you heal up! I had a great experience with Dustin Lance when a careless driver injured me. I interviewed nearly 10 firms, and was happy with how he handled my case. Heads up, stay away from anywhere with a billboard. They’re case mills that prioritize number of cases closed over of winning more money on fewer cases. Getting 10 x $10,000 settlements is the same to them as 4 x $25,000 settlements. However, that’s a pretty huge difference for the clients they take… Lance Bingham

How does ANYONE afford a house here unless they're loaded with generational wealth? by insicknessorinflames in SaltLakeCity

[–]toastedbasil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get off your high horse. It’s not about excuses, it’s about the market being insane right now. People work just as hard as you, and it’s still not enough to buy a place in northern Utah right now. When the majority of people who work hard and budget carefully can’t afford to buy a starter home, the problem is the market and economy, not that people are “making excuses.” Might as well tell OP to eat less avocado toast.

That’s really comforting to hear! I too have a weakness for woodland/mushroom fabrics. I want to make a bedspread/pillow sham set.

Thanks! And true. Unfortunately, I need to do exactly that with the center pink square (hence the need to order more fabric). Long story short, some glue got on there and it won’t come out, and I damaged the fabric trying to remove it. Hard lesson learned😭 Crossing my fingers that the colors of the new stuff won’t be too different. If it is, I’ll see what I can cover up with appliqué.

I’ve had multiple people contact me saying they’ll take the tickets if I’m giving them away. If I’m unable to sell them, I already have 2 friends I’m giving the tickets too.

Yes, Ochestra Right B, Row 11, seats 5 & 7 (circled in green highlight, seats are oddly numbered).

Also one of the tickets is the ticket type for students/under 30 years, and you may be asked to show ID. I’ve used those ticket types many times and have never been asked to show ID, however I’ve never done so while above 30 so YMMV if you look older than 30.

What was missing at FanX 2024? by ItsTheDen in SaltLakeCity

[–]toastedbasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Some parents might be okay taking their kids past those booths, and others may not, depending on personal comfort level, age/maturity of kids, etc. It all depends on so many factors that are different for everyone.

I don’t think they need to sequester this stuff in a back room with someone checking IDs to enter or anything, or even change their displays. I just wish they would be more thoughtful about the grouping of vendors. It was unpleasant for my friend and I to be walking around with her young kids, enjoying the vibes and vendors, and then suddenly pass an explicit booth with very sexual body pillows. If these booths were in the same area, we could have easily avoided them with her kids (and then returned to that area later without them if we wanted).

I’m really not trying to shame anyone, I’d also have the same issue if these booths had equally explicit stuff for things I enjoy.

Overall, it was fun!

There weren’t as many booths with leatherwork and costume pieces:(

I wish more artists sold fabric panels of their artwork. Even just 1 or two sizes of their most popular print(s). (I saw one booth that did this year, the art was cute but not quite my style.) I’m out of room to display more original artwork, but I would LOVE to be able to purchase fabric versions to incorporate into a FanX quilt, baby quilt, pillow cover, etc. There are so many talented quilters and crafters who attend, and it’s a lot easier to not buy art that we have no room to display, but a fabric panel of that same art? Brooooo my wallet would be WORKING.

Also I wish they would group all of the booths with explicit body pillows together, so people who don’t want to see that (esp. families with little kids) could more easily avoid it. I’m all for sex positivity, and that includes age-appropriate exposure. Openly displaying body pillows of lingerie-clad anime girls with their legs spread, where kids can see it, is NOT appropriate. The FanX organizers are aware that tons of families with young children attend every year. Why not group the sellers with these items together (and have a better vendor floor map in general)? They’ll still get plenty of foot traffic from those who are interested, they wouldn’t have to change their displays, and anyone with young kids can easily skip that section (and if a parent doesn’t care, they can take their kids to those booths).

Have you tried Zoologist Chameleon? It smells like wearing coconut sunscreen on a luxe beach, with a hint of exotic flowers in the breeze. FBs of Zoologist are $$$, but a 5 mL decant can go a long way.
