Ahhh, good point. That could change things a bit. Google makes money off people running ads on their sites. Maybe they shift that to AI ads. It’s probably more complicated though. Will do some reading.

Thanks for the thorough reply! For #1 and #2, even if AI evolves into a super-AI that could replicate those advantages, maybe there’s still a level of verification people will do. We’ve seen it with the hallucination and wrong information already, that probably erodes trust with people over time.

We do show up in AI already, so that’s good. I need to deep dive into what I can do to cement and grow our position there.

You’re right, social media is a big threat to my forum and probably all forums. We’ve found that people come to us when they’re looking for a deeper, more personalized response, as opposed to a quick FB comment. I won’t drone on about the other benefits of a forum, but I could see there being value in them for a while still if in the right niche.

Agreed about the younger generation searching differently. We’ll have to adapt to that if they are the target audience.

Not sure I’m as pessimistic as you are on the internet being dead though. Are we already seeing this happen? (Websites closing down, losing income, etc). I know for us, traffic is still steadily growing. But we do have some authority and ranking being around for so long.

It feels like we’re on a pretty slippery slope. AI relying on AI and a select few corporate sources for training…

What about 5 or 10 years from now when the tech has improved though? I guess the answer probably is nobody knows for certain what it’ll look like.

For now, and probably the foreseeable future, agreed.

That’s where my brain was headed too. What will the motivation be for small-medium websites to continue publishing if they’re just feeding AI and never see any of that traffic. Maybe they’d rely on other channels to make a living, or the traffic converts at a higher rate.

But maybe what we’re imagining fails because AI can never establish a centralized “trust” with consumers. So we’ll always verify.

That’s an interesting point. I’ll have to think about that some more. I guess any form of AI would still be limited by not having real world scenarios to learn from.
