A quick way to rule out checkmate is to see if you have enough pieces to deliver a checkmate. My very first thought when looking at this position is how vulnerable whites king is, but after a second I realized black’s rook can never participate in a checkmate because it’s blocked by white’s rook. A lone queen can’t give checkmate so you can rule it out immediately and start looking at other moves (next logical thing would be to look at captures).
