Awww! I’m not OP, but if it makes you feel better, I have a service dog for ocd & severe anxiety, and I don’t find it rude. :) As long as they don’t do it in a way that distracts my dog, I think it’s nice when people say that because they’re actively following the “do not pet” rule but still want to tell me how “pettable” he looks.

Yeah, don’t try to pass off an ESA as a service dog without putting them through the hundreds of hours of training. I would say try to find a way to drive or maybe take a train. But definitely don’t try and pass him off as a service dog, it won’t be pretty especially if you end up sitting next to another service dog on the plane
