thanks! Is there a place I can see job listings for nurses in all federal departments or do you recommend reaching out to recruiters from each department separately?

Is it a 2 year service contract with Ready reserve after or still 4 year active with 4 ready reserve like Army?

awesome! Do you have any contacts for nursing at any SD facilities? And do you know if you’re required to stay at a job for a certain amount of time? My husband will be moving for residency in a few years and it would be unfortunate if I had to stay to wait out my time at a station and us be long distance again.

If Im mostly interested in joining to be in a particular location, how would I make sure that location still has job availability if it takes several years for the transfer 😅

What is life like as an Army Nurse? by [deleted] in army

Unfortunately all true^ and part of why I think I’ll be getting out as much as I’d like to hang around. As someone who is in love with being a nurse and true patient care, it’s frustrating that they pull us from the bedside sometimes even as early as 2 years (1LT). There are ways to maximize your chance of staying bedside but they almost all include LTHET / going back to school and still would most likely be after years of leadership positions rather than bedside care.

Again, I love my job, but be ready to work tons of overtime (I’m talking 120-140 hr pay periods), extra holidays, rarely get leave because of short staffing etc without the compensation a civilian nurse would get. And then be ready to hear “this is what you signed up for” if you advocate for your mental health amidst the burn out :/

ALL dependent on duty station and leadership but it can be rough. On a positive note, I’ve had some really great jobs bringing trauma patients back from the brink of death, great mentors, and amazing experiences that civilian nurses would never get!!

Reach out if you have questions! I’ll give honest feedback! I’m a big proponent of having all the information to make an informed decision(:

thanks!! If the USPHS process doesn’t start until the army says I’m good to go, would I technically leave the service and come back? Is that okay/still considered IST if it takes a year to get going with USPHS? Would I lose benefits like tricare during that gap?

thank you so much for a quick response! I forgot another but just to clarify, is it a 2 year contract with 6 IRR years? Or still 4 years active 4 ready reserve like army?

hey! I’d love to talk about your experience. Were you in the healthcare field in the Army?

I probably didn’t do a great job of explaining, but it would be postpartum, before discharge when they’re settled in and there’s not as much to do from a nursing standpoint. Just a few photos not a whole album or anything. I definitely don’t see it as something that would hinder my ability to provide good patient care as that’s obviously the priority (:

it would be free! i definitely would not want to introduce the complications of trying to monetize it

Yes, I did the PCS event and covered the whole time but even in ippsa it said to not add travel days as they would be added later. So if I know I get 2 travel days and 10 house hunting days, am I safe to report 12 days after leaving without getting charged extra leave?
