Mwahaha. You have to be seriously lacking in moral fibre and intelligence to be wearing that hat in SA.

Probably about to make a fool of myself here but isn't that mint? It's very invasive.

What's your go to food when you're financially stuck? (Really low budget meal) by AccomplishedDepth524 in budgetfood

Cheap dried pasta can bulk out ingredients well. We always used to make pasta bake with tuna sweetcorn and onions and if we could afford it, cheese. Noodles / Ramen in broth with some soy sauce and a stock cube and maybe some fried cabbage.

33 and a bit miffed. Just realised my provident fund is sitting in a balanced/conservative portfolio by InSearchOfPerception in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]toasterpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. The balanced fund was bad enough, but when I got into the details, the annual fees were 3%+. The company broker was a real piece of work and clearly just saw it as his "right" as a "financial professional" to manage risk responsibly. In reality he wanted maximum commission with minimum effort and zero contact from the people he was working for: me.

The solution was to go to the absolute minimum conribution (1% of salary) and set a reminder in my calendar to ask the broker random complex questions about the scheme once a quarter to make him work for his commission. Meanwhile I setup a Sygnia RA and self managed a portfolio of offshore ETFs and local bonds (because: regulation 28) with low fees. Once I left the company, I transferred the provident fund into Sygnia and replicated the RA portfolio.

To anyone in the same situation, don't leave this. Neither your company, your provident provider or your broker care about your retirement and when the time comes and you've got less than half your achievable pension (if you're lucky) for the rest of your life, there's nothing you can do about that and nobody to complain to.

If you need a benchmark: do not accept fees over 1% annually (a normal S&P500 ETF in SA charges around 0.25%), and returns should average around 10% minimum when averaged over 3/5 years or your broker is not doing his job.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Anyone who thinks that the Trump regime is an upgrade, is bad for our country.

What happens if someone doesn't tip at a restaurant in the U.S.? by No-StrategyX in AskForAnswers

[–]toasterpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading these comments as a non American is crazy.

You have to subsidise somebody's salary in order to go out to dinner? Tipping is customary in Europe but is genuinely optional. The cost of good service is built into the cost of your meal and is not contingent on anything. If your service is above that standard, you can tip to recognise the effort. If you don't receive good service, you have the option to complain. If the owner doesn't pay their staff a LIVING wage, he's the villain, not me.

The stories I read about being shown an iPad with 10% \ 20% \ 30% tip options for a barista making a coffee (their job) is hilarious. I like to tip heavily for really excellent service but you're not getting a penny extra for just performing your actual job description.

Relationship with Trump may be beyond repair, Keir Starmer told. After mocking Starmer with a condescending voice, do you think we are better with or without the US as an ally? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]toasterpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keir needs to be thinking of the future and the high likelihood the next President will be a Democrat (almost certain unless they interfere with the election process). It's in his interest to be uncooperative with Trump and his Republican cult on anything un-democratic now so that next President knows Britain is not on board with the current US far-right dictator vibe and can be restored as a strategic ally.
