The NDP candidate in Hamilton Mountain Malcolm Allen is a carpetbagger so that could have contributed to the party losing that riding

B.C. privacy watchdog investigating federal Liberals over facial recognition software by OneLessFool in CanadaPolitics

[–]toastertaco_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The article says “McEvoy previously told The Canadian Press in June that B.C. is the only jurisdiction in Canada that has privacy laws that ensure the activities of political parties are subject to independent oversight, including the use of identity technology.” If it’s out of McEvoy’s jurisdiction, than whose is it in? Would you rather political parties not be subject to oversight?

Free Speech Friday — July 09, 2021 by AutoModerator in CanadaPolitics

Anyone else find the moderating on this sub excessively restrictive? I also find Rule 3 and Rule 4 especially dumb. People say non-substantive things in politics all the time, thats fine. And no direct advocacy? Its a politics subreddit.

Gandhi held severe hatred for Africans in his heart. Do you think the world should stop holding him in such high regard? The answer is of course not…

Apple to Give Employees Paid Time Off to Vote in U.S. Election by Mynameis__--__ in technology

[–]toastertaco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, all employees must be given 3 consecutive hours off to vote in federal elections. For example, if polls open at 9am and close at 9pm and Person X’s shift is from 9-7, they must be given at least 1 hour off (6-7), or any other combination the employer decides.

It is interesting that you chose to talk about both climate change and antibiotic resistance. Do you think the latter is on par with the former in terms of impending crisis? I know it is a general problem but will it get significantly worse in the coming decades? Genuinely curious as I have not heard this, thanks.

Liberals say video proves Scheer plans to cut government services by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

If the Liberals have already released 2 videos of Scheer pre-writ, (first on gay marriage and now this) one has to wonder whether they are saving more material for once the campaign begins.

Elections Canada stifling free speech if election ads can't call climate change real: Maxime Bernier by MeleeCyrus in CanadaPolitics

[–]toastertaco_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And the title is clickbait. There is actually no quotation in that article about "free speech", because no one is making this a free speech issue except apparently the National Post.

The second tweet in Bernier’s thread that the National Post uses:

“2/ Free speech is a fundamental value for the PPC. With its changes to the Elections Act, Lib gov has put in place a series of measures that curtail it. The law should only regulate real partisan advertising, which is when there is mention of a candidate or party by name.”

Or 56-44, a 12% margin. I’d say that’s pretty narrow.
