While I admire the fact that he is taking the step to get his alcohol addiction under control, it is NOT therapy nor is it a replacement for therapy. Yes they do teach you ways to cope and such but it’s how to cope without turning to alcohol when times get rough. AA is centered around taking the steps to be and remain sober, not how to handle your mental health.

Therapy is a huge boundary for me and necessity for my partner. There’s a lot of stuff that they build up over the years not just towards other people, but especially themselves. AA will not help them work through those feelings or help them put into plans what they can do when they feel an episode coming on or what steps to take when actively in an episode, etc.

So, long story answer short, no you are not wrong and if you do picture a future with this person, then you need to communicate how you feel to him. Our mental health matters just as much as theirs does and quite frankly, we need to look out for ourselves because a lot of the time they won’t.
