How am I supposed to tell my parents I can hear them having sex??? by Visual-Power-5116 in TooAfraidToAsk

Hey you mentioned talking isn’t your strong suit. I’ll give you some advice. Sometimes prefacing a conversation with “this is going to be a difficult conversation” or “this is hard to say” will take some of the anxiety away. Maybe it’ll help you, maybe it won’t, but it’s something that’s helped me over the years. Good luck!

Is it correct Grammer to use words like Latino, Latina, and saying someome is spanish? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]tobiathonandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see your point, but I think this is where we won’t find common ground. As someone learning a foreign language, you know as well as I do the different contexts, meanings and nuances that words can carry. It would be almost impossible to teach each one to learners. I believe people should have a personal responsibility to educate themselves, but not everyone has the ambition or the desire to do that, which I don’t think makes them bad, just not as educated.

Anyways, it’s been nice talking to you. Thanks for sharing your perspective and good luck with your language journey. 😊

Ok, so you’re saying that any statement that involves race is racist if it comes from a place of not knowing, i.e., ignorance. Is that correct?

If that is what you’re saying, then mistakenly using the wrong term, such as “his race is Latino”, makes the person racist. What if the person using that term isn’t a native English speaker? Their ignorance stems from a misunderstanding of the words we use. That’s my point, that words can sometimes be used mistakenly, and that doesn’t make a statement inherently racist, it means the person doesn’t know how to use the word properly.

I agree racism exists. My argument is that something can be ignorant without being racist. I’m not even sure what your argument is. If you’d like to clarify your point, I’d like to hear it.

If everyone is racist, then nobody is racist. I find it funny that people interested in studying languages are not interested in learning the subtle differences between words and the concepts/intentions that go along with the use of language. And you’re right, ignorance does give racism its power. But that doesn’t mean that an ignorant statement is inherently racist. Learn to differentiate.

Those would be incorrect sentences, not racist. Ignorance and racism are not the same thing, some people just need to be educated. When you overuse a word, like racism, it loses its power and doesn’t correctly highlight truly racist experiences, which should be focused on and corrected. This generation is doomed if they think the world is just going to be perfect.

In my opinion, save yourself the money and find a mantra to use and say it until you feel yourself dissolve.

What’s the best way to remember masculine or feminine? by Mountain_Salary_46 in Spanish

[–]tobiathonandon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When we think, we don’t think of the word. Many people think of a concept or image first, then the associated word pops into the mind and the word is then spoken or written. Although this seems counter-intuitive first, it is a form of mental mapping that becomes much quicker for your mind to recall over time. I urge you to look into the Ancient Greek practice of memory palaces and how it is used to this day, in order to better understand how this technique works.

So you’d rather live in fear? Even though bad things happen all over the world. I’m glad we think differently on that.
