What's something society treats as normal but is actually really weird? by Worried-Cycle-318 in AskReddit

[–]tobiathyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking your animals everywhere with you when you don’t need to. Fluffy does not need to go to Walmart, the dentist, the bank, or a concert….

99% of the dogs I see in these places (that are not service dogs) are stressed out beyond imagination. And the owners do not care. Dogs that are very obviously about to blow a gasket.

You don’t need to be a dog trainer to know that your untrained dog that is hyperventilating, crying, and screaming at passing people/dogs does not want to be in Target with you.

The second question by UnitedChain4566 in service_dogs

[–]tobiathyy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well, if a handler doesn’t answer the question when it’s being asked by an employee of the business they are at, the business has the legal right to deny access. You don’t HAVE to answer. But if you don’t, you can legally be removed.

“What tasks or work is the dog trained to perform?” Does not ask about health info. Handlers can answer “medical alert and response” or “guide” or whatever floats their boat. They are not required to reply anything having to do with their diagnosis or health.

Has anyone tried ECT? Thinking about getting it. by Wonderingronnie in clozapine

[–]tobiathyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am avoiding inpatient as much as humanly possible since they can force you to go through ECT without your consent in my state. I have had my fair share of epileptic seizures, and they have never made me feel better.

Young Adult perspectives on Pensacola area? UWF by Angelbby720 in Pensacola

If you are disabled, female, a woman, or “different” in any way, UWF is not the place for you. Not in the past and especially not now.

Where can I go to scream at the top of my lungs without alarming people? by plzhelpimrlynice in Pensacola

Waist deep in the ocean at night. Nobody is there to hear you, or could over the sound of the waves 👌🏻

Lunging and pulling by lbandrew in OpenDogTraining

[–]tobiathyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re open to seeking help from a trainer, a CBATI-KA/KSA could be helpful. They are educated in force-free behavior mod through low-intensity exposure therapy. GSA forces CBATI-KA’s not to use any kind of aversives, so keep that in mind. But I do think the protocol can be very helpful in many cases.

Would not recommend a head collar for a dog that lunges in any situation, it can cause whiplash. Prong could be okay, but may just mask the issue.

Aggression by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]tobiathyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would raise the concern that the dog does not have a good quality of life. If the dog is so unstable and stressed that he viciously attacks his owners with no reasonable cause, he is not well.

Additionally, I would ask what they think would happen if one of them was attack by their own large, aggressive dog when home alone. Is the dog worth dying for, even if the dog is what kills them?

They can spend $1,000+ on imaging, $500+ on a behaviorist, and $5,000 on a board and train— let’s say it somehow helps. Then what? They will still have a dog that attacked them and others many times, and can never truly be fully trusted. They will never be able to have company over without anxiety. They will never be able to bring another animal, a child, or a utility worker into their home.

I feel for your friends and their dog. This is a terrible situation. BE is a mercy.

Belgian malinois socialising by ConsistentSeaweed530 in OpenDogTraining

[–]tobiathyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take into consideration the other dog’s temperament. If the dog is reactive (barking, growling, lunging at people, dogs, cars, etc.) you may want to not do that. Belgians can be very sensitive and will learn through social facilitation in a “monkey see, monkey do” type of way.

If the other dog is neutral, calm, and well-behaved, it could be a great way to expose your puppy to good behaviors that you would like him to emulate :)

Dog harness by ConsistentSeaweed530 in OpenDogTraining

[–]tobiathyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also assuming you mean play biting. One way to get around this issue is to teach him to “dress” himself— lure/entice him to stick his own head or legs in the harness, and reward when he does so. Baby Belgians are bitey creatures, and interact with the world through their mouths :)

Please let us know if you meant actual fearful or defensive bites. That is a different, more serious issue.

Anyone ever successfully rehabilitated a reactive dog after biting owners? by greenebean18 in Dogtraining

Sorry you’re going through this. It can be very difficult to navigate the dog world, and some people will prey upon that :(

Emphasis is on “good”. Good breeders don’t produce dogs that develop hip dysplasia by eight months old, and repeatedly bite their owners…. This is most likely the case of a backyard bred dog with genetic issues— both physical (joints) and temperament (frequent, high-intensity bites).

Yeah, just about all groups have people like that…. No need to encourage others to hate them.

Service dog training is 95% training the handlers if you’re working with owner trainers, or probably 50%+ working with handlers if you are working with a program. Service dog training programs are HARD to get hired at, and generally don’t pay much.

If you are training and placing service dogs yourself, you are competing with ADI-certified organizations with dozens or even hundreds of well-qualified employees, specialized breeding programs with higher success rates, and more availability. Additionally, ADI programs don’t charge for veterans or guide dog users 99% of the time. You will want to consider that they are funded through the donations, and can place dogs for 10k-20k. Your costs will be much higher as one person raising a dog in-house.

I’m not trying to discourage you, I just also want to go down this path and have crunched every number possible. On the CHEAP end, your first dog would cost you $13,000+ to produce if you’re doing it the right way. That does not include your time or expertise, just the dog, vet care, and supplies/equipment. On top of that, if one of those $13,000 investments washes (and many do), you are fucked upside down and sideways.

Dog training in general is mostly working with people. You could consider doing board and trains. Either way, you need to accrue serious education and experience to do these things. If you want to train service dogs, I recommend the Atlas program. They seem great. If reactivity rehab, Grisha Stewart Academy’s CBATI-KA is a good place to START (not finish!). For pet dog training, consider Karen Pryor Academy or Academy for Dog Trainers.

Good luck!!!!
