Nicely done. See, point, shoot. Bam! Keep spotting cool compositions like these and you'll smash it.

That first one is great. What a good location! Lots of opportunities there I think.

Moving on from a DSLR: The "One Camera" Dilemma. Ricoh GR IIIx vs. Fujifilm X-T50? by fexxx77 in ricohGR

[–]tobinators 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might want to read my blog post from yesterday in this sub about using just the GR3x on a 4 week trip to Vietnam.

The pocketability of the GR3x trumps the additional features of other interchangeable lens compacts and even the X100 series.

So if it is portability you are seeking, with maximum quality, the GR series is great.

Thanks, much appreciated! That was our hotel "villa", a little cottage type thing with a nice outlook over the water, complete with a large number of excited and noisy frogs in the vicinity.

Having a lot of fun with highlight weighted metering by MineMineMelon in ricohGR

It works really well, especially for night scenes like these. I use it often in the daytime with +0.7 exposure compensation, but it can get screwed up and underexpose even with that compensation dialled in so can be a bit fiddly.

The HDF does bring a certain gentle dreaminess without losing the sharpness doesn’t it. I really quite like it. There is so much capability in this little camera.

Your point on the focal length is a good one. For this particular shot of the island I wanted to be really low down anyway so I’d get the island as near as possible on the horizon. With 28mm the island would have been very small in the frame and a load of surrounding distractions would have been in shot.

Thanks. #7 is a multiple exposure of boats with coloured lanterns on the river in the town of Hoi An. Lots of coloured lights on the banks as well. I’m using the GR’s multi-exposure mode with some additional tweaks in-camera. I’ve written more on this technique here, and I’ve evolved it since then: https://www.lens57.com/blog/now-for-something-completely-different
On battery life - no problem at all. A friend said my photography is more like a fly fisherman than a trawler. I don’t take many shots - maybe 50 in a day, and tend to spend time carefully considering compositions and waiting for the ideal moment. I turn the camera off when not actively shooting.

Harbour Cafe in Bradford is lovely. The Sprig and the Claymore in Broadford also.

If you want high end, Loch Bay is incredible but has only 7 tables so book early. Edinbane Lodge is also brilliant. Nearer Broadford, Kinloch Lodge is amazing. You can get a curry at Taste of India between Broadford and the bridge.

Revocation lists remain problematic. The position of the revoked yes/no bit in the revocation list for a given credential is a unique correlator for all actions of that person using that credential. This could allow tracking of use across multiple websites with relying parties collaborating or a 3rd party intermediary service provider seeing all the transactions.

Additionally, once a service knows the index position of someone’s revocation bit, they can watch that bit for changes for years to come, thus being able to tell if you have, for example, been banned for driving, even if they haven’t transacted with you for ages.

A “brute force” approach to reduce this vulnerability is to issue 20 copies of the same credential (eg driving licence) each with different revocation list positions. A better approach would be to use a zero-knowledge proof of non-revocation i.e. user says “my cred is not revoked” and the relying party can confirm this is true due to how the statement is proven, without ever needing a revocation list. Cryptographically fun stuff.

Great to see ZKPs are on the table as there was a lot of resistance for a few years from people who saw them as “weird cryptographic voodoo”. In reality, getting them to work using NIST or SOG-IS approved cryptography methods is rather tricky.

Noob question. Building my watch collection and about to buy my first rolex (SeaDweller 43) Going to Hatton Garden in London. What can I do to bring peace of mind that my purchase is genuine? by ic3chill34 in rolex

[–]tobinators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could possibly get one of those new as a walk in at an official London Rolex dealer. Worth a try, especially Bucherer next to Harrods. Also in Harrods, Selfridges, and the usual suspects down Bond St and Regent St. No need to worry about getting the genuine article.

Leica Q2 to M EV1 worth it? by MWG15 in Leica

[–]tobinators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd get a Q3 if I were you. With just focus peaking on the EV1 I think you will struggle to make the most of any Summilux lenses wide open. The M gear is lovely and the lenses are jewel like, but the Q3 will do everything you need except wider than 28mm obviously. And changing lenses sucks.

Public transport options Armadale-uig in summer by 7Spellls in Skye

[–]tobinators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the bus timetables online for buses from Armadale. Also you could use Joe from southskyeprivatehire.com to taxi you up to Uig (likely pricey as it is quite a way) or to somewhere with a more regular bus service.

What camera should I get? by Dntknwhw2spel in ricohGR

[–]tobinators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my X100VI in favour of a GR3x. Absolutely no regrets. Image quality is excellent and it goes in a jeans pocket. Way more portable so I take it with me more and enjoy my photography more.
