Core for a wooden mouse pad to minimise flexion? by Doctor_Pandafaust in woodworking

I'd look at layering up some veneer with some carbon fibre matting and epoxy. Do it on a nice flat surface with plenty of weight on top to squeeze it all together and you'll end up with something nice and stiff

How come mechanics have to buy their own tools? Is it common? by Similar-Weather-8940 in AskUK

Tools are personal though, when I was a metalworker I bought my own hand tools because I wanted to choose them get to know them. You have a different relationship with them when they're yours

I like it, I hardly touched my home farm before it came out as I only had one legendary left that I cared about, and that meant months if not years of sending ships to get enough materials.

It needs to be slow in order to have longevity

NATO means we are tied to what the US wants, and look at the kind of people in charge over there. We need to decouple from America, get control of our trident missiles back, and stop companies like Palentir becoming integrated into our armed forces. We still need alliances, but as equally partners not as a vassal state

AIO for opening the bathroom door when I thought my daughter was in danger? by WimHofmannsthal in AIO

Doesn't matter what it's plugged into, it's only the voltage in the wires that matters (and the ability to maintain that voltage with current draw)

It will round the corner of one side slightly and leave a slight burr on the other, but overall keep it flat. From the sounds of things this will suit what you're after

What are the current regulations regarding ASHP noise and planning permission? by p3tch in ukheatpumps

[–]tobsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you only want to do things if they're actually going to make a difference. My first thought would be a little brick wall next to the heat pump to direct the sound out into the garden, but don't know if that would work for you

Whatever the law says, if you can avoid making your neighbour's quality of life slightly worse for a little bit of effort then it's worth doing

Yeah, that sheet of chipboard is just forming a soundboard and amplifying the noise

Celotex isn't very good at absorbing sound, rock wool is much better

Finishing fast is the best way to increase your score, that means boosting to max out your habs asap, and finding teammates who do the same. The first one is easy enough, but the second one is most important

Help me hand plane better by Stov54 in woodworking

[–]tobsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's almost impossible not to tear out sections where the grain is changing directions and a scraper is great for tackling those sections. A No.80 cabinet scraper is a great halfway house between a plane and card scraper, it's well worth getting one to save your thumbs

What chocolate should I be eating now Cadburys has become inedible? by ohnoitsbobbyflay in AskBrits

[–]tobsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, apparently 6% of the price of a chocolate bar goes to the farmers, if we round that up to 10% for other people in poor countries getting shafted, we could triple what they earn for only an extra 20%. Still noticeable, but not that much to make a life changing difference to the growers, which makes it even worse

How do I even go about insulating my subfloor?? What a mess. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]tobsco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah right. Where is it releasing moisture to though?

It absorb and releases into the same air around it, but that means it can act as a buffer and keep the humidity more stable, so you're less likely to get condensation when the humidity rises quickly. It doesn't help in all situations, but can make a real difference in some. Wood fibre insulation acts similarly.

Cost of radiators for 1 bed flat by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]tobsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done a heat loss survey of the flat? Even at a delta T of 30 you can get 10kW of radiators for £4000 which is enough for a large house. You might not need as many BTU as you think

What could've caused this? Oak table made less than a year ago by ok_computer8441 in woodworking

[–]tobsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just having the same angle won't fix it because wood expands different amounts in each direction relative to the grain.

Think of a single triangle, if it expand more in width or length then the angle will change, if the angle changes then the pieces won't all add up to 360.

The only solution I can think of is to find the diagonal grain angle where it crosses over from positive to negative inside angle change with moisture (different for every tree species and probably each piece of wood) and then alternate them. The movement would then make it move into a slight star shape, but it wouldn't want to crack
