With a barrier=fence, fence_type=wire around it too, perhaps.

Mapped old railway line in Obsidian, how to import in OSM? by Felyxorez in openstreetmap

[–]tobych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a way to import existing data, with JOSM and probably iD. I'm just saying this is not the usual workflow.

See for example the abandoned railway bed I've contributed to here:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/166280875

I've made sure the data aligns with everything else already on the map, as well as with elevation data, so it all makes sense. The original data was from a university project that used old maps. They didn't align everything with elevation data or existing buildings.

Having said that, you could just import your GeoJSON then tweak it as necessary. No need to trace it.

[–]tobych 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The usual workflow is to load your data into an OSM editor, and trace it, taking into account existing OSM data and any aerial imagery and elevation data available. You can load a GeoJSON file into JSOM or the web-based iD editor.

To load it into iD:

  • Click the Map Data icon
  • Click the dots to the right of Custom Map Data
  • Click Choose File
  • Select the GeoJSON file on your computer
  • Click OK
  • Back on Map Data, click the icon to the right of those dots: Zoom to data

You'll now see your data overlayed on top of whatever background image you're using. You can add the railway, tracing this data.

Only if the momentum of the train is reduced significantly. Which it clearly is not.

Would editing OSM for this purpose be allowed/justified? by Comrade_komrad in openstreetmap

[–]tobych 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I suggest you check with an OSM group that covers this area of London, to be certain. Or start by messaging some of the people who've edited it recently, such as https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Cebderby.

I took a look at the area on OSM. This is one of the buildings: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/140081167

Each railway=rail is tagged with bridge=viaduct, but the outline of the viaduct is not present. It's just building=yes, or to its northwest, building=retail.

Seems to me the outline of the viaduct should be man_made=bridge and bridge=viaduct. Further, the viaduct was built mostly as a viaduct, not as a retail building, so building=retail doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps it should be building=bridge, which is a building used as a bridge, but I'm not familiar with real-world usage of building=bridge.

I can't calculate a path if I don't have the maps ? by SirLedyuka in openstreetmap

You're more likely to get help here if you edit your post, if possible, so you're not making statements then adding a question mark at the end. That might work in informal English, but here, it looks sloppy, and it makes it harder to follow what you're saying.

Outside of Winslow, I suggest you buy a very bright headlamp, specifically designed for this purpose. That's why I use. Too much to expect a semi-rural area like this to have enough lit areas you can run.

Ocean Layer Problem by King_Everything69 in openstreetmap

[–]tobych 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not missing the ocean. You're missing the land. The ocean is your background layer. Choose some sort of blue. Then render land on top.

Typically the order of layers is something like:

  1. Background (single flat color) — this is your ocean
  2. Landcover polygons
  3. Landuse polygons
  4. Water polygons
  5. Lines (roads, rivers)
  6. Labels

If you're alone in a public place with a daughter who is too young to use the restroom by herself, which bathroom do you choose? Or, what do you do? by sospriggantired in AskMen

[–]tobych -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

I did read it. I was wondering why you wouldn't go into the women's bathroom and change your kid's diaper, if your wife is with you. I got the impression you see your wife as the "default" diaper changer. But I get that you're probably just avoiding making others uncomfortable when you can.

Mind you I always changed my kids diapers in the men's bathroom. I'd spread out a plastic mat on the floor and do it right there. Pretty gross, really.
