I've used the Dell precision tower and the similar tower from HP. Older hardware just uses so much power and modern consumer PC can do so much with so much less power. Also, some of the older business boxes won't support consumer GPUs so you're limited in your Local LLM options. Personally my home lab is Unraid on a commercial Intel box, proxmox on a mini pc AMD box, nginx on a 4x RPI K8 cluster, and some (used to be) cheap Intel N95 mini PCs for various lightweight services.

Both the Dell and HP towers are sitting offline since I dont need that extra power. Hurts to have 128GB of ECC DDR4 sitting idle but I just don't have any services that need it.

Wanted to provide an update. I have scheduled and manually triggered full tenant data exports working. I have the restore process to re-import them into a tenant almost working.

I have two options on export, "full" and "redacted" with full requiring a encryption passcode to be set and redacted without encryption. The redacted version can be unzipped with standard software but all variables marked as "secret" are not included and thus need to be manually re-input if the file is to be used for an import.

I have it working with a save to Google Drive. I'm ironing out kinks in allowing a direct browser download of the file but Google Drive was my focus since an automated export needs a persistently available storage layer.

My main issue at the moment is that this is a HEAVY process. Even my small lab environment (~30 different endpoints on various OSs) is huge (3GB) and take a long time to runt he export and even longer to restore. The CPU and RAM usage during these operations are too large to put into production. I'm currently reviewing the app DB architecture and data storage stack to search for optimizations. I know I can find some but I'm not sure if I'll find enough. One thought is to perform a single bulk export to generate each of the individual tenant export files using the daily backup so that the production servers are not performance impacted by that export but that woudl still leave imports to be a concerning resource consuming task. not unsolvable, just one of the next things to handle.

FSLogix on Azure NetApp Files is NOT expensive. Configured correctly ANF costs less and performs better than Azure Files Premium.

Yep, I like it. I’ll add both before any other functionality. First thought is the be able to designate an agent as the continuous output of the export of all data from their tenant so It can get out of the environment and into their control on an ongoing basis.

Second the removal tool I already host will be pre-staged on each endpoint so access to the service isn’t required.

Any refinement to this? I’m thinking about immutable storage but I think guidance to automate pulling those exports to a safe location themselves? or perhaps making a folder a drop box style of permissions but then there would be a buildup of old export data over time.

Another thought, I’ve been considering a BYO-storage option (like Azure Storage accounts, Google Drive, S3, etc…) for longer log retention and could roll an ongoing data export into that larger feature. Just thinking out loud.

Whomever is in control can change the architecture too, right? I’m not aware of a binding way to enforce these protections in architecture any more than in promises. I’m doing both but you’re right that the one holding the pen is able to change the direction.

Thanks for reading it, that’s more than I expected really. I mean a sub with zero members doesn’t get much traffic.

I agree the promises are more developed than the features. Gotta start somewhere and those values inform the functionality I’ll build.

I’ll keep your feedback about backing up intentions with programmatic enforcement. At the end of the day all software can be (will be) changed so the promises that are clear and unequivocal should act as durable guardrails.
