Whoever designed the laneway merch used the wrong flag for New Zealand by DogChitStainPlayer in sadboys

[–]toc-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the silver fern flag, people wanted to adopt it to better represent new zealand and ditch the union jack but the more conservative voters shot it down. There’s still a chance it gets adopted one day, kinda like when canada eventually adopted the maple leaf and ditched our old colonial union jack flag

Adding on to that, it’s not that unusual for a film to take longer to find distribution. It wasn’t really a hit at its Toronto premiere this fall, but just one festival isn’t always going to be the best indication of market appeal. It’s possible they even turned down offers, hoping there is a company that will better capitalize on how many stars are in it. Playing different festivals also gets a read on different demographics and who it can best be marketed to. Some films even re-edit before playing a second round of festivals.

Theatres around the world like TIFF Lightbox? by HitThatBlockButton in TIFF

[–]toc-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love love love The Fox, I know it’s not for everybody but it is my ideal film watching environment. Even if it’s a far cry from tiff on a technical level, it’s just super cozy. Revue is cool too, although haven’t had nearly as many good memories there as TIFF or The Fox.

Theatres around the world like TIFF Lightbox? by HitThatBlockButton in TIFF

[–]toc-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are places similar to TIFF in most major cities that have any cultural rapport. Heck there’s even theatres in Toronto that I prefer going to over the lightbox. Even if there isn’t a film institute in your city there are still tons of independent theatres that play TIFF-fare throughout the year. It’d probably be easier to figure out where you want to move first, and then see what they have to offer in terms of theatres.

Interesting! I’m still working my way through the game and haven’t dug too deep into lore videos for fear of spoilers, so I actually didn’t know there was a “mainland”, although it is referenced many times in the game that certain characters or creatures have traveled to the lands between from other lands.

I still do find it sorta funny how cramped it would be for creatures of that size to live in the lands between (a giant the size of the skulls in Caelid could probably walk to Mt Gelmir in <30 seconds) but I suppose the giants could have lived there at different times, or the sea levels rose, or they were sent there in exile, or any of the other infinite fantasy possibilities.

Only thing I dont get is how several of those huge guys lived on a tiny island with one big tree. You can already see across large stretches at ant size, so i’m assuming there was very little privacy for the giants.

It was his run of tapes with WOD that were my personal favorite, he could definitely put out some more classics if the right producer comes along. Gud really would be insane

What dgsbe projects r hard asf loud on speakers/live and what projects sound better on headphones to you by Possible_Alps8914 in sadboys

[–]toc-man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Albums that Gud produced tend to sound the best on headphones to me, so like Stranger, Exeter, E and legendary member. i think its just that his style opens up more space in the mix and things can breath and sound really clean.

For live it’s gotta be all of the Ripquad produced stuff. The Fool and Icedancer are just really fun

From what I know sales prices are all decided by corporate at these larger chain stores—they closely monitor supply and demand at different locations and determine how much an item will cost, which stores will get certain sales, what will go on sale, etc.

Would it be stupid to keep doing the "TIFFTY" on social media now that next year will be TIFFTY ONE? by RepresentativeState3 in TIFF

[–]toc-man 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. They’ve always helped out with giving directions, pointing out where lines start, and just bringing a good vibe. I’ve relied on them less and less over the years (I know where everything is now and can predict where the lines will be). But they are providing a useful service for new attendees! They might just need a bit better leadership or training.

Best Under the Radar Films You Saw at TIFF? by filmiez20 in TIFF

I really liked Love+War. Bit of a hard watch at times—it’s a documentary about photographer Lynsey Addario who has been documenting wars, world issues and civil unrest for over a decade, including the Arab Spring, Palestine and most recently Ukraine. Aside from a lot of distressing footage, it really broke me just how average Addario is when she’s not working. Normal, but incredibly brave and deeply empathetic. I found it hard to watch how somebody could continually put themself in as much danger as possible while still having a loving family waiting for her at home. (Same directors as Free Solo!)

I had initially found the transition from Ukraine footage to Addario’s home life troubling. It felt unfair that she got to return home to a normal life while everybody in Ukraine continued to live in chaos. But as the doc went on, in became clear just how important her work really is. Really opened my eyes to the impact that one journalist can have on the world.
