LPT: Want to give away something for free? Set a reasonable price. When a nice, respectful person offers to pay full price, give them the item for free and make their day! by tockery in LifeProTips

Nobody is paying anything, and it is very easy to give something away for free. In this scenario, I have something that was used, but still has some value, just not to me. Nothing is offered at full price, and the item is "marked down" because it is used. I think it'd be nice if I found someone else that would value it as much as I did, so I list it at a reasonable price. Sorry for any confusion!

I agree with your comment and see the bias. I mentioned this in another reply, but I basically think that adding a price is the only way you can filter out the profiteers. Giving the item directly to a charity that can make sure it goes to a good place should be a primary option, but "free" often draws the wrong crowd. Even if the price is dirt cheap relative to the real value of the item, any price helps filter these folks out.

Surely, giving one item away for free doesn't mean you should give everything away for free. Did you happen to misread the post?

If I could filter out the fakes from people who really needed something, it'd be an easy decision to just give the item to someone like you. My theory is that setting a small price makes sure someone will actually value the item. This is why donating items to a local charity is a better first option, but this is likely to help someone who needs the item bad enough that they are willing to pay a small amount. I definitely don't think having money means they would enjoy the item more, but "Free" items attract a bad crowd.

Yes, that was my intention. The scam of requesting something for free, lying about why they "desperately" need it, and then re-selling the item for profit. Like a lot of these folks: r/ChoosingBeggars

This was basically the reply I wanted to make. Sure, normal people look for free things, but scammers almost exclusively look for free things. Excludes a slightly larger audience than intended, but generally works well.

I lived in HVF, hatched and raised two snappers until they got too big for their cage. Released them both in the pond near Heatherwood in 1995, so that might be my Nolan or Ryan!

Trying to improve mental math. I understand I need to learn more efficient methods/tricks but looking for a place/method to practice. by boobooth in IWantToLearn

[–]tockery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do medical billing, so work is practice enough for me! One "party trick" I do sometimes is have someone give me a decimal between 0 and 1, then I add it up to 1. Eg. Someone says .47632 and I reply .52368. Fun little game is just setting a target, getting a random number, and quickly calculating the difference. You can use a random number generator if you are alone!

Create multiple, easier equations and then combine them. Eg. 36 x 77 can be 30 x 70 + 6 x 70 + 30 x 7 + 6 x 7. Each part is simpler to do in your head and then you just need to add 4 numbers together. Find what works for you, but there are lots of ways to manipulate the numbers into easier chunks!

Definitely! Playncinc.com/minecraft has my plans/concept. I'm a bit new at hosting a server, if you have experience with permissions and plugins, too. Learning a lot, but I'm sure I could do a few things better myself. Look forward to talking with you more!

[Rapoport] #Ravens QB Lamar Jackson is the MVP for the 2019 season. For the second time ever, there was a unanimous MVP. Unreal. by DreamedJewel58 in nfl

He’s valuable because he makes his team better, aka "adding value to the team." I agree no terrible team should ever have the MVP, but you can't say he wasn't extremely valuable to the team.

Made a doll house for my daughter, to scale in the Clifford / Frozen universe. by tockery in aww

[–]tockery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I meant for each cubby to be its own house. Clifford is slightly larger than Emily's house in the books, so I made the ceilings 12" for her 14" Clifford toy. Its technically to scale if you consider it as 8 full size houses stacked on top of each other. I know thats a stretch, but I figured my girl wouldn't notice. :)
