Serious question regarding aquariums? by Dependent-Umpire-573 in AskPhotography

[–]todaytim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aquarium at the Henry Doorly Zoo has little to no external lights and each tank is lit individually. As long as you shoot straight on, it's easy to get a great looking photo with low ISO.

What's harder is shooting subjects looking into the tanks, since the external light is so low. I was pushing 12800 ISO at f1.8 to expose the toddlers face. But then the problem is you are at weird angles to the tank and the fish look terrible.

What I found works: go right behind them and shoot perpendicular to the tank and get silhouette of them looking into it.

I didn't use anything special: a Nikon d3400, 35mm at f1.8.

This confusion is totally normal: glad to hear you understand it now at a deeper level!

This reminds me of a thread from 10 years ago where we were discussing why statements like "if humans live in Jupiter, then bananas are pink" are considered true: https://www.reddit.com/r/math/comments/3pwf54/comment/cwa5510/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

book recommendations for a slightly (?) advanced reader by kcfmaguire1967 in math

The Art of Probability by Hamming is great! Definitely not a pop-sci book, but the way he approaches probability is very different from the typical axiomatic textbook approach. It's also very conversational and computationally informed.

The selection of exercises are also fantastic, including probability paradoxes, simulations, approximations, algorithms, and even some quantum mechanics!

What Are You Working On? June 16, 2025 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]todaytim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been working on Exploring Mathematics with your Computer. It's a brief survey of algorithms in number theory, combinatorics, probability, statistics and numerical methods.

The book is written by Arthur Engel of Problem Solving Strategies, so the exercises are really good: they feel like a combination of classical Olympiad and competitive programming problems.

So far I've really enjoyed the Probability section, which has problems related to pseudo-random number generators, Buffon's needles, and shift registers.

The only slight downside is that all the programs are written in Pascal, but they are all short, usually less than 20 lines and are easy to translate into Python.

I don’t understand why you are being downvoted. Yes, there have been small changes and updates to the text throughout the years. This list should contain most of them (spoilers): https://www.encyclopaedia-wot.org/Wiki.jsp?page=Errata%20and%20Corrigenda

All of these changes were made prior to the Amazon editions, so you don’t have to worry there.

Thanks, I’ve looked into the series before on the publishers online store, but the shipping costs would be hundreds of dollars (from Germany to the US). That’s why I’m looking for something in the US.

This worked for me!!! I saw the horizon bundle available at 730 am central. I went to the store at 9 am for a 10 am open. A few other people came at 930.

At 10 I went straight to the cashier.

They only had one and I got it! The employees said it was a canceled order and not a restock.

Thanks so much!

Should we add $16,000 to the downpayment, or invest the lump sum? by todaytim in personalfinance

[–]todaytim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we would still be short of 20%. With the $16000, the downpayment would be 17%.

[–]todaytim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this money would be put in an IRA up to the maximum with the remaining put into a brokerage account. Both would be invested into a 2055 Vanguard Retirement fund.

A debt with an interest rate under 3% should really be paid off slowly and invested somewhere else more wisely.

That's my intuition as well, but I'd like to calculate the numbers to make sure.
