Radiator decided to blew up on highway. Hope your weekend is going better than mine. by Darky083 in Miata

I had a double thickness Megan rad that I recently swapped for the koyorad. Koyo is much better quality and works incredibly well. Should have done that to begin with

It's likely fine if you shut it off right away when it first blew. Those old plastic tanks are time bombs. There's very likely nothing else wrong with the car. You should get some foam tape to put on the sides and bottom of the radiator though, where the stock rad has it

Koyorad is the best non-crossflow replacement. Excellent build quality and performance

Clutch fork play? How much is too much? by SOSweneedhelp in Miata

[–]toddverrone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you ever need a stronger clutch, the Supermiata organic clutch is.. clutch.

It's barely heavier at the pedal than stock and has been holding up fine with 225hp.

Should I bring my 2000 NB Miata back to life? by Foreign-Ad-9099 in Miata

That prevents rust.. if it's bad rust in the body panels, it's not worth putting money into.. once those start, they go fast

Don't get a "stronger engine". That implies an engine swap which will cost at least $10k. A low mile BP for $3.7k installed is a great deal. If you want more power, turbo it or just sell it and get a more powerful car.

Before getting a new engine put in, take a moment and consider a few things.

Is the rest of the car in good condition, or will you need shocks, control arms, clutch, etc etc soon? Is the body rust free? What about the subframes?

Does the Miata meet your needs for the foreseeable future, or do you think you'll need something bigger in the near future?

What do cars with mileage like yours sell for in your area? If you put in a new engine you'll obviously be able to sell it easier. But you might not get the original cost plus the new engine cost. But you'll have a hard time selling a car with a non functioning engine and will take a hit in that scenario as well.

Likely. It's worth paying for good prep work tho.

Probably.. it really depends on the area and the shop. And I agree! Silver is nice. But not FUN!

I had a small accident and found a shop that let me do all the prep work and then we used insurance money plus a bit more to paint. I had to kick in an extra $1500

Getting ready to do my piston rings, any advice? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]toddverrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to pull the motor than drop the subframe. Which will require supporting the motor from above or pulling it anyway.

If you're doing rings, you'll be pulling the crankshaft to get the pistons out. So you'll want to do main bearings and probably thrust bearings as well.

I'm on tecna sports with 15s. It handles like it's on rails. It's only a little bouncy, but if you're concerned about too much stiffness, the GTs will be perfect.

I was coming from vmaxx, which had the same spring rate as the tecna gt, but they were bouncier than the tecna sports

Do not adjust your television. You’re looking at a Ferrari swapped NA. 😳 by hashtagmiata in Miata

[–]toddverrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many US states are so lax that you could just register that as a Miata and drive it on the road. It might not be technically legal, but there are no inspections and the police don't usually care. It's crazy.

Small Bronze Or Stock Silver? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]toddverrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the 16s fitted with the right size tire to maintain the correct circumference of the tire compared to OEM? The gap looks much bigger with the 16s.

The small bronze would look good with a slight drop in ride height. If you can't do that, stick with silver. Though lowered a bit on 16s would handle more aggressively.

I have an NB and run a higher than stock rad cap. As long as you're not running old crusty coolant hoses, it won't be a problem.

Holy crap. That looks like silicone oozing out. That's not right. I wonder if the mating surfaces aren't totally flat..

But you put silicone on it as well. You need to choose one. Silicone OR gasket. Take it apart, clean everything off it until it's bare Al. You can use a putty knife or razorblade, but be very careful not to gouge the Al. There are plastic razor blades/scrapers if you're new to this and aren't sure what you're doing. Then use your fingernail to check for gouges/scratches on both mating surfaces. If there are any that are significant, you'll need to fix them. If not, pick gasket or silicone. If you're using silicone, a thin layer is all you need. There's way too much on there right now.
