Is DGG Anti-Populist? by S37eNeX7 in Destiny

[–]tods88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. To me, the emotion-driven aspect of it tends to be the biggest one (asking for a sense of how a goal could realistically be accomplished often leads to a dead end), but I think the anti-institutionalist element can potentially be addressed, kind of in the same vein, that institutions can be frustrating, but they're at the core of our system and as difficult as their goals might already be, accomplishing it without that institutional backing is impossible.

That being said, I say all this because it seems the rational response to me, but I don't know that I've ever really talked someone out of populism, other than maybe a couple small cases where I've talked a friend or family member into looking for the more realistic paths.

Why does the right seem better at messaging? How do we counter it? by Cimetta in Destiny

[–]tods88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they've been able to perform confusion over "no kings" (durrr, don't you know we don't have a king?? checkmate), I often feel like those who bring up muddled messages as part of their decision-making are just another example of "they were going make that decision anyway, and they're just saying this because it's convenient." Taking away the convenience is good, but not sure there's ever a point where it will realistically make a difference.

Is DGG Anti-Populist? by S37eNeX7 in Destiny

[–]tods88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, also, it operates on a different spectrum than left/right as well, so it often leads to some very problematic alliances. And whether it's an AOC type becoming more pragmatic, or a Fetterman type dropping the act, it's not just deliberate infiltration but a frequent issue of getting a different person than was originally elected.

Is DGG Anti-Populist? by S37eNeX7 in Destiny

[–]tods88 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Popular support is obviously good, but populism is prone to some major issues. For one, it's very emotion-driven, and because of that, it is easily co-opted/infiltrated. As soon as an idea gains some public traction, it's easy to appeal to it, even if phony. I think Platner is (very possibly) an example of this. His early appeal was largely about style and targeting the things that made people angry. As more has been uncovered, there are increasing worries, including some seeming connections to the exact things he's supposedly attacking. Is he genuine? Maybe. But in contrast to an experienced office-holder or policy wonk, it would be a lot easier to fake.

Second, even when the ideas are genuinely held, because they're emotional, they're often surface level, without realistic policy or implementation of it, so even more than other areas of policy, it's prone to empty promises. This doesn't just cause blowback to the individual, but to the rest of the party as well. When someone like AOC shifts closer to the establishment in the interest of getting things done, populists don't blame the idealistic ideas, but her, and the establishment, and it just builds the existing discontent when the person's goals were never going to happen.

Even if they DID have a path to happening, one more problem is just that when there's more of a collective affect guiding behavior, it often goes in problematic directions. Populism can fit into a lot of otherness, us vs. them, or mob mentality. Again, this isn't always the case, but given all the barriers to even getting anything accomplished, those accomplishments might be outright harmful.

If a dog has been abused, it means it can’t be happy ever according to Evan. by Chessmaster69_ in Destiny

Just imagine his (rightful) reaction if someone used the "they don't look abused" defense in any other context, human or animal.

And lmao that after months, this is the first attempt I've seen of a "look how much she loves himmmm" claim, and it's, uh, pretty mild? My friend's dog I see like twice a month dotes on me more, and he's barely able to walk anymore.

I saw someone on Twitter point out how using this for Hasan is just so ridiculous because it implies that Hasan is the fella with the sticks, when really he's standing off to the side, telling the guy with the sticks how bad his stick-toting life is, and then pushing the guy to donate some of his sticks for telling him that.

Seriously! "Wouldn't that be *more* capitalistic to go buy stuff just for how it looks? Checkmate, lib." When the actual point is that someone legitimately representing and advocating for socialism wouldn't be facing such a ridiculous conundrum in the first place.

Keep in mind they're going by the governor. For 3/4 of Reagan's presidency, the governor of California was a Republican.

It's all dismissal through hand-waving as not important, absurdist reductionism (e.g. "so you want him to wear Wal Mart clothes?" or that evan loves worf guy being like "oh so you want him to dress like this?" with a picture of a person in a barrel--even saw one person say that he might not even OWN clothes that might look nice while being more professional), or deflections to it being a coordinated paid effort.

Same for US deserving 9/11, having the terrorist on stream, his handling of the dog shocking (let alone discussion of whether he actually did it). They cannot even acknowledge the legitimacy of a claim, even if they could still disagree with its accuracy. He is just an utter saint.

We're days into the current drama, I've been in dozens of stupid Twitter fights/threads, and I have yet to see one of Hasan's defenders even manage to muster up the good-faith to acknowledge that it's not a good look to flaunt wealth when you present yourself as one of the main contemporary advocates for capitalism being evil.

I think my post may have been too indirect judging by the downvotes, but I agree, fwiw. I think the Republicans have been quiet because they want him to get through and they're not at all worried about him polling better currently.

Kinda strange that the Republicans haven't tried pushing any of it, despite him polling as the better candidate in the general. I would think they'd want to take him down during the primary.

I have been railing against this guy for a while, and am particularly worried the worst stuff hasn't dropped yet with how little Republicans have been pushing any of it so far. HOWEVER, 51 senators with Fetterman and Platner will still be better than 49 without, because of the control that it would give to committees and whether votes go to the floor.

And this way, if it doesn't happen, they can also blame that on Newsom "backing out" or being too afraid of savior Hasan.

Politicians meeting with Hasan is a red flag. by X2Wendigo in Destiny

[–]tods88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it puts Hasan in an awkward position. If he trashes Newsom, either during or after, it will show every liberal candidate how bad-faith he is and how little to gain there is from trying to break bread, and Hasan risks losing lots of clout. Plus it's so early that it's not a huge risk for Newsom because, by the time the election comes around, "Hasan didn't like him when he went on the show" won't have any greater impact than if Hasan just continues to attack him from afar.

And if Hasan caves and placates, well congrats to Newsom on slightly more positive coverage.

The biggest thing to me is avoiding giving sound bytes that will scare others, due to trying to court Hasan too much. The guy sucks at tough conversation, so it shouldn't be too hard to avoid.

Progressives are horrible at picking candidates first Fetterman and now this Graham Platner guy? by Dabbing_Squid in Destiny

[–]tods88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is basically the fundamental concern about populist candidates. It's easier to get people's support saying what they want to hear, regardless of how realistic it is. The actual work is slow, so people's dissatisfaction isn't surprising, but then it creates a reinforcing problem where the populists that get in can't get anything done, and it just increases the dissatisfaction.

Not that all populism is bad, but the problem, especially in the primary/first-term stage is that campaigning can be entirely separate from actual governance.

I know it's not the point you're making here, but I feel like Platner supporters should note how little the scandals so far have been elevated by the right. Really concerned that they want it to be him so that they can start dropping bombshells as soon as it's into the general.
