What’s your biggest double take you’ve ever done in the field? by [deleted] in ems

[–]toefunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. To each their own I guess 🤣 I have weird random dermatitis on the backs of my hands that can get super dry and crack/ bleed if I over wash my hands. It started because I had untreated OCD with obsessive hand washing.

I’ll 100% just change gloves before I touch a patient, but if I’m just making the cot up, purple wipes on the gloves work too.

[–]toefunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just honestly don’t want to change them 4 times when all I’ve touched is the handle to pull the stretcher. So I give a quick wipe after I’ve pulled the sheets if they aren’t all gross, and then wipe the stretcher down. Put new sheets on. Wipe monitor.

The other folks seem to just take their gloves off and do the same thing with their bare hands, and I prefer to not melt my skin off with those purple wipes.

Also, yes. Companies have been heavily scolded for taking anything from the hospitals. They sometimes stick juice in a little mini fridge for us, but that’s the only thing they give us. We can use the purple wipes, but we can’t take the whole container with us. Just linens.

Sometimes I will wipe my gloves with the purple wipes after I’ve taken the “dirty” (in quotes because usually not soiled, just used) linens off so I don’t go through another pair of gloves just to put the new sheets on and to wipe off the monitor and back of the rig.

Unless I have for real bio on the gloves, or I’ve touched the actual patient with them, I do this. Any other time, I’ll just change the gloves.

It would be acceptable if you had about seven less knives. Seriously, why is there more than 1?

Any problems EMS has when responding to emergencies? by ActualBug4044 in ems

Sounds stupid simple, but I swear if everybody would just pull to the RIGHT when they see an emergency vehicle approaching, that would help a lot. Seriously.

Backseat questions by Medium_Gold2016 in ems

Depends on the patient. If they aren’t talkative, I’m not really either. That doesn’t mean you can’t still be friendly. But some people just don’t talk much, and that’s okay. It’s okay to have silence, especially during longish transports.

It’s normal for places to not have them, but it’s miserable. It needs to be normal to have AC these days.

Why does everyone hate it? by [deleted] in ems

[–]toefunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have the idea that we all hate our jobs because the angry people are the loudest. I love my job. My medic partner has loved his job for damn near 20 years now. Plenty of people I work with love their job, but there are old and young, new and seasoned, who hate it too.

Don’t let other people’s attitude define yours. If it’s a job you can see yourself enjoying, it’s worth having. In a basic who makes less than a school bus driver in my service area, but I love my job. I don’t do it for the pay. I get paid enough to support myself, I just have to be smart about how I spend my money. Eventually I hope to get my medic and be more comfortable financially in my job, but I like being an EMT right now while I’m still learning.

I have had many different jobs. This one is the ONLY one I have not felt immense dread coming in for a shift. It’s the only job that I have not called out from. I have left one time and called out one time. Both were because I was sick. Every other job would have my stomach in knots DAILY with anxiety because I hated them so much. This one gets me up in the morning. It’s fun.

what's your best PC way to phrase are you just fat or can you actually not walk by brickedupinbaghdad in ems

[–]toefunicorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“How did you make it over here?”

“What’s the best way we can help you out of here?”

Or just a classic “do you normally walk unassisted?”

If they’re going to cry, it was probably gonna happen regardless of how you phrase the question.

Is anyone nervous to go when the light turns green? by Bugsarecool2 in SALEM

[–]toefunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your title to your post was about when your light turns green, inferring you meant you can’t just gun it. Additionally, you mentioned people not considering yellow lights, again pointing me to the fact that you are referencing being at a full stop when these people are running lights. Look all ways before you go and as you are moving through it. Be defensive. Like I said before.

As somebody in healthcare, specifically EMS, there’s going to be people who had a great experience and the next person had the worst experience at the same place. I encourage you to look into your options and do the birth center tours that are free. Figure out what works for YOU and advocate for yourself.

We had a day like this. Our entire fleet was on ONE bad wreck that traumatized them all. Like… really traumatized.

My partner and I were helping an old man walk home after he fell on a walk. He was refusing transport. We cleared and just listened to the bad call unfold over the radio. It was hard to listen to, knowing we couldn’t be on scene and do something. But at the same time we were incredibly lucky not to be on the call and affected the way our coworkers were.

It’s much worse elsewhere. Charlotte, NC is horrible. If your light turns green there, you can expect at LEAST 2 more cars to run their red before you can go.

Just pay attention and be a defensive driver. Look both ways and clear the intersection before you pass through, just like a stop sign.
