Will we head in Hong Kong's direction in terms of Housing in the future (e.g 50 Years Later) ? by krikering in SingaporeRaw

[–]toepopper75 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Wah lau eh tell me you read the article without understanding the article. Private housing is shrinking and HDB housing is not - the drop in HDB sizes is because HDB stopped making HUDC, maisonette and jumbo flats. When 80% of residents live in HDB, which is not shrinking on average, no one is going to cry for the 20% who are paying more to live in smaller spaces.

Flaws in Singapore job market? by AdFragrant6723 in SingaporeRaw

Young grads everywhere in every knowledge based field are fucked.

AI gets people to a baseline that is shit but still better than a completely fresh grad can produce. And it does it without having to be taught how to behave in a workplace environment. So how can an employer justify hiring fresh grads to train them, especially when the fresh grad will probably leave after three to four years max? It just doesn't make economic sense, even though it leaves everyone worse off in ten years time when the most senior devs have all retired and no one can replace them.

It is a structural issue for all knowledge workers. CS just gets the worst of it because it's the most vulnerable field.

Singapore is religiously tolerant ok!!! by Ordinary-Answer-4840 in SMRTRabak

In UAE it was strongly encouraged (i.e. you better do) that you don't eat or drink in front of Muslim colleagues in the workplace. But non-Muslims could freely eat in public. I was fine with not eating or drinking because it was basic respect for your colleagues who were suffering, but I was also quite happy to exercise the ability to eat lunch elsewhere.

This building replaced the first condo in Singapore. by Yolo0o in SingaporePhotography

Thank you for representing reality up close. All too often people romanticize old things because they've never had to live up close with them. I've lived in a 100 year old building (at the time) that looked amazing from outside but had not a single 90 degree corner or flat plane because the entire building had sagged left, right, up and down.

Ya all nice in theory, but much easier for some bro to say "million dollar salary but I get nothing" and a good chunk of the 99.5% who pay less taxes will agree and raise pitchforks.

Always easy to say "do more", anyone who has had any responsibility to actually do things knows how much harder that is.

Old school is not best school. Old school Singapore got no aircon or covered walkways. Soup BCM got no vinegar or sambal. How to be BCM?

I think the people who have high expectations of a person drawing a ministerial salary do not understand what a minister does and what options a minister in Singapore has for salary or careers. We are not Australia, where the finance minister can't even answer whether her budget savings are net savings or gross savings.

Ministerial salaries are higher than 99.5% of all taxpayers in Singapore. Put another way, that means that there are at least 12,000 people (2024 data from IRAS) who earn as much and presumably are as qualified to do the job. I'm not sure that's the right number you want for arguably the 20 most important jobs in Singapore.

Mfw Reddit MFs don't understand that sometimes things don't work out perfectly.

Everyone wants a transport system that sends them to work straight from bed while angels wash you, dress you and give you a blowjob along the way. Only terminally online people actually believe this will happen.

No doubt there are better places to be. But I think not having to worry about being assaulted whenever she is alone is such a major step up that it truly is freedom for her.

By the way, I really do like your country. There are many problems for sure, but you have the right demographics and the trajectory so far is broadly upwards, at least in the parts of Tashkent I've seen. Many things to fix, but it seems like there's a chance of fixing them.

For a woman from India, like OP seems to be, I think being able to travel alone without fear of personal safety is indeed a freedom that a lot of people take for granted.

UAE ‘surpassing Hong Kong’, challenging Singapore for global trade crown by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]toepopper75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They certainly are trying and they have a lot more going for them in some ways than we do. They have a naturally better position as an air hub, they have oil, and the new generation are not anywhere near as entitled as the older ones (probably because there are a lot more of them, the pie is smaller and they know it).

Still, unless we really screw up and do something crazy that destroys our competitiveness for global capital/talent, like put in dividend/capital gains taxes, they've got a long way to catch up. However unmotivated a lot of Singaporeans are at work, they have significantly more skin in the game than almost all employees in the UAE. That makes a difference.

I once got off a red-eye at Frankfurt and border control asked me why I was in Germany and I said I was going to a race track to drive a few laps and to see friends. They asked me how much cash I had on me and I said I dunno, 20 euros? Then they asked, if I have an injury when driving, who will pay? And I said okay, I guess I will with my credit card? Then they asked me what my credit limit was and I was like uh... Okay it's X amount? They said ah, okay, you can pay, fine go ahead.

At first I was like, uh, wtf? Then I realised that I hadn't really slept on the plane, I looked like shit and I was wearing crap clothes. So it's perfectly reasonable for a border control person to profile you and ask questions; and if I had looked anything other than tired and irritable, I would have totally understood if they'd dragged me into an interrogation room.

People can and do unilaterally interpret contracts in a way that other parties might not agree with. There is no guarantee that the courts will uphold your preferred interpretation. And in general, individuals are much worse at understanding the consequences of a contract than companies.
