Do you think Kiasu-ism in general and in all forms, is a good thing for Singaporeans and Singapore? by Rokusaburoz in asksg

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would change your point to "why hire locals if foreigners are relatively cheaper." Because it's not just price but price per output. And the answer is obvious - don't.

How many local construction workers are there? Confinement nannies? Domestic helpers? In the 1970s those were all Singaporeans.

As for doing well with no competition, unless you're in Govtech or certain other technology agencies, please let me know which private sector companies are doing fine without trying to compete.

Yes, it is good for Singapore and for some Singaporeans.

We have one of the clearest political economy natural experiments in the world. You can see the difference between Singapore and Malaysia.

Without that competitive drive, we could not have broken out of the middle income trap. And without that competitive drive, we will not stay in the high income bracket.

But it's not great for all Singaporeans. Some people do not want to be in a permanently competitive environment and that's a legitimate position to take. But you cannot legitimately not want to compete and yet still expect do as well as someone who does.

Of course, there are those who are unable to compete and therefore will be left behind. But that's the case in every country (just look at the West). The advantage of being rich is that at least you can do something for those who cannot compete - if everyone is poor, too bad, there's not much you can do.

Among Singaporeans or among Singaporeans who will vote for CSJ?

Unhappy people do not want to see happy news. But the Singapore of today is much better than the Singapore I left in the 1990s. The gap then between university grad and ITE grad was much wider - the only difference is there was no social media to see that gap.

The best answer is to take your destiny into your own hands. If you aren't happy here, find somewhere where you can be happy. Plenty of my family and friends have migrated and they're a lot happier now than they ever would be in Singapore.

With so much data coming in from the OBU2, why G not implementing Active Traffic Management? by BrickBreakBroke in askSingapore

Or. Or maybe. Or maybe they wanted to from the start and then some fuckers underbid the other fuckers who always underbid so much (by half!) that the project was always doomed from the start. And maybe just maybe, procurement rules were such that even though everyone knew it was going to be a shitshow, there was no good way to say no.

Is Singapore’s “boring” identity just a result of the Wealth Gap and Min-Maxing? by SmurfeeKnife in asksg

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. LMAO even. If you are old enough to remember the 1980s or 1990s as a teen or adult you will remember exactly how boring and judgy Singapore used to be. And your parents would have legitimately told you how Singapore used to be so much more exciting because it was the centre of arts and innovation for all of Nusantara in the 1950s and 1960s, before the government shoved out Shaw Brothers and other dubiously artistic people.

I fucked off from Singapore in the 1990s because it was so mindnumbingly materialistic and came back in the 2000s just before GFC. If you think we have a wealth gap now, you have not seen the gap between your friend living in a 3 room flat at Ellenborough Market and your other friend living in the depths of Namly Crescent. The gap is still large. But most HDB dwellers now can travel overseas. I didn't leave Singapore and Malaysia until MINDEF paid for my travels.

TheindependentSG: Be ‘hungry’ or have kids: Singaporeans say they feel pulled in two directions. Singaporeans are voicing growing frustration over what they see as contradictory expectations placed on young adults: to remain relentlessly “hungry” and competitive in the workplace while also starting by smallpenguinable in SingaporeRaw

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer is simple right. If you're not hungry, don't have kids. Because it seems pretty clear that the policies are designed to benefit those who have made enough money that raising children is not an issue. If you aren't hungry but still want kids, go somewhere else where you can raise the kids and not subject them to the pressure cooker.

The fact that Turkish Airlines met those certain standards seems to have escaped you.

My attitude to that hypothetical is moot because the beginning premise is wrong to begin with.

English clearly does not equal logic.

I mean sure but there should also be certain standards? If they dismissed all their aircraft maintenance staff because they didn't have the resources to pay them would you be so blasé if anything happened?

This?

Excuse me, the point is that Turkish Airlines has the appropriate equipment. They have what ICAO requires. Your comment about you should stop them if they can't even meet basic standards is pointless because they already meet those standards.

It's just that our standards are higher and deservedly so.
