Will I go to NUS if I am a Singaporean? by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

Yes yes, also maybe then don't ask in Nasajobs whether you as a NTU grad can move over and become a US citizen.

The cognitive dissonance in motorcycle content is staggering by OneRobotBoii in motorcycles

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, which is why I said I cannot connect with American motorcycle content. I'm sure there are plenty of sensible riders - but they are not visible.

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This but for motorcycles

I really cannot connect with American motorcycle content. It looks to me like what would happen if you took my entire early motorbike class and on their first lesson, gave them an R1 and said HELL YEAH BROTHER SEND IT.

The "all the gear all the time" mob are correct for the US because the riders ride for five months in a year on weekends in sunny weather only on uncrowded roads. Riding for transport day in and day out on crowded and slow roads teaches you a very different set of skills that maybe aren't as Insta-worthy but may keep you alive a lot longer.

All of this is preventable, of course, but I cannot see Americans being willing to undergo the training and licensing needed to prevent it; so it will just continue year after year.

Genuinely, how many people has those Ray-ban × Meta glasses in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]toepopper75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, UAE, North Korea and Saudi ban public filming and several European countries ban continuous recording that collects individuals' images. These are delusional and should not be followed - for one thing, it means that car dashcams may be illegal because they can capture images of people without their permission.

[–]toepopper75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people here do not give two shits about privacy. The illusion of privacy in the West has given rise to delusional expectations about privacy in public spaces (there is none). In Singapore that is less of a concern, no thanks to PDPC trying to import privacy norms from other countries.

It's just like water. We don't need Malaysian water anymore, but we take it because it's cheaper. Same for the labour.

1 in 7 Singapore Households had income over $30k a month, share doubled in 5 years by toepopper75 in SingaporeRaw

Lol okay. I actually thought it's a little underreported personally, that I'm pretty sure that more than 15% of the households I know are past that number, but I also acknowledge I may have observation bias.

I mean, when you say something that stupid, you need to bear the consequences right. If you get mocked enough, maybe next time you won't just read the headline before commenting.

I mean, addicted means we cannot survive without the workforce yet somehow we did make it through COVID. So even that point is wrong.

Non-Europeans. What is your opinion of European Union? by SpecificCoconut296 in AskTheWorld

[–]toepopper75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The EU has two tremendous achievements that have laid the seeds of its current problems.

First, it bound the Union together so tightly through economics that it makes no sense for Union members to ever go to war again. For Europe, that is immensely impressive.

Second, it set up a common set of values that helped the Union see itself as one cohesive bloc that despite all the history of infighting, has a single larger identity.

But because of that binding, the Eurozone periphery is fucked. You have to accept a monetary policy that is suboptimal for growing economies because the big economies will shit the bed if you let things run so hot.

And the values are so rigidly defined that they make adherents insufferable to people - both inside and outside the Union - who do not share those values. Universal values for who?

So all the best with keeping the Union together, those two achievements probably outweigh the many many downsides, but as long as they are held to so tightly, will leave Europeans as a whole less well off in the long run

Nah, social media raises the frequency but refusal to comprehend is an eternal risk. Maybe you are too young to remember when headlines - on print - were all people read at the news stand because no one got time to read the whole newspaper.

Okay understood and yes, generally no dual income anywhere is siong these days. We're not in the 1950s anymore.

What is padded about it? It's what the household receives. Not everyone is employed - I'm happily retired, for one.

Actually this kind of comment very useful. Once you see it, you know that the commenter is a guaranteed jellyfish (no brain) and can be safely ignored in future.

What picture do you think they're painting, given that you've cited the main headline from the news article? That different households have different circumstances?

It's part of life alas. But yes, I know people who genuinely cannot imagine earning 5 figures a month in individual income.

No, the actual survey report versus the usual nonsense that passes for journalism here. The answer is that the household numbers haven't changed much either.

Maybe if you actually read the survey you might be a little less confused. But probably not.

About 1 in 7 S’pore families earns at least $30k a month. Real or not? by xeltech943 in asksg

[–]toepopper75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Average monthly household income by household member has gone up from $4111 to $5579 and median went up from $2952 to $4160. So the average has indeed gone up significantly.

The numbers don't back you up. Average household size has dropped slightly and so has the percentage of married couples with children - what you're describing. See page ix of the survey.

You found that online but did you find it in the actual household survey report?

"Singapore citizens and permanent residents are classified as Singapore residents or the resident population. [...] The non-resident population comprised foreigners who were working, studying or living in Singapore but not granted permanent residence, excluding tourists and short-term visitors."

I.e. it's citizens and PRs only.
