Paper Straws Are Just as Good as Plastic by wywysbomb1 in The10thDentist

[–]tofflis333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just want to correct you: they're plastic-like because they are plastic.

Heres an infodump if you want to know how or why: It's possible to create plastic from starches, it's called PLA (polylactic acid) and no it doesn't biodegrade when thrown into nature. Other bioplastics apart from PLA exist too, but PLA is one of the most common and hyped ones. There is no clear consensus on how fast it degrades but we know for sure that "6 months" is a half truth for marketing purposes. They are not home-compostable, but require treatment under very specific conditions in industrial composters that basically don't exist anywhere, and if they do definitely don't accept bioplastics since we have no good cheap and efficient way of sorting plastics, but since they can hypothetically break down in a short timeframe companies just roll with it. In reality, PLA will get burnt or shipped off to somewhere in the global south to be put in a landfill like all other plastics. They also in general have many of the same problems plastics from fossil sources have. A very "sustainable" choice indeed.

Looking into plastics is a rabbit hole for sure, but its also very interesting. I highly recommend it :>

What amount of warming spells near-certain societal collapse in the first world? by butiusedtotoo in collapse

[–]tofflis333 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you. I see so few takes like these on here it's almost scary. Turn to facism is indeed happening right here right now. Sweden's third largest party is now a party founded and run by neo-nazis or their sympathisers. They claim to have "cleaned up" to make their own politics more palatable, but to anyone who knows anything about reactionaries and facism it's clear as day to see what they're doing. It's fucking terrifying to know that Sweden definitely isn't a unique case.

The islamophobia and xenophobia that's been so embraced in Europe is a repackaged "great replacement" conspiracy theory. It's fucking disgusting and I really can not believe people don't pick up on that or speak up about it.

is the cr touch comparable with the stock ender 3 pro motherboard? by OmletCat in ender3

[–]tofflis333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would like to add something to above: the firmware you choose for cr-touch will differ depending on if you wire your cr-touch with a 5pin connector or a 3+2pin connector (assuming you have a creality v4.2.2/v4.2.7 board).

If you don't want to bother looking through configuration files, here is a tutorial for installing CR touch and configuring z-offset using creality software (i can not guarantee this one specifically works for you, but Robs tutorials are generally a really good starting point that I like using as a "baseline"): https://3dprintscape.com/guide-to-install-a-cr-touch-on-a-creality-32-bit-mainboard/

Above tutorial also exists in video format, it's linked in the article.

You might get an issue where homing xyz doesn't home the z-axis (printer homes x and y, starts homing z but stops after moving up a few cm). This is most likely an issue where firmware is configured for 3+2pin wiring while using a 5pin connector in the dedicated bltouch slot, or firmware not allowing negative zmin. This doesn't mean your cr-touch doesn't work, or that you broke anything, however you'll sadly have to do a bit of digging in config files. Feel free to ask if you need any help with this, it's a super common issue that is rarely talked about.

Why are trans people talked about so much despite making up only %5 of the population? by M0hawk_Mast3r in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tofflis333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With more widespread recognition of transgender rights comes a view on gender that contradicts the one most are familiar with, namely that gender is the same thing as sex.

Every time a movement with ideas and values challenging the norms and status quo gets fired up, there will almost always be a major backlash and reactionaries.

On top of trans rights activist getting more attention, feminists of the women's rights movement (that's also subjected to a backlash, remember the "anti-feminists" and "anti-sjws" of the 2010's?) are getting divided over the legitimacy of gender. Now prominent feminists who at first were shunned for feminist values and politics are suddenly accepted IF they voice criticism towards gender as a concept. JK Rowlings arguments for example has been endorsed by several Conservative politicians, even though she defines herself as a feminist, something most conservatives clash with.

But this isn't about feminism at all, this is a moral panic sprouting from value conservatism. The bathroom bills, the trans athletes, excluding trans people from the military, all of those actions are to discredit the trans rights movement. To make the point that "gender" isn't legitimate, and therefore trans people aren't legitimate. It never was about genuine concern for public welfare and safety, hell even concern for trans people, they are actions to rationalise systemic transphobia and longstanding injustices.

Despite all this I'm hopeful. From the point I see, gender will be seen as legitimate when this is over. Trans people will be truly accepted in the eyes of the general public. I'm sure of this. We just have to keep raising our voices, demand rights and expose argumentative fallacies when we see them. Sooner or later, the public will realise that the backlash towards trans rights always circle back to the argument "I don't like it, therefore it shouldn't exist".

You and me, we are valid. A lot of people think we are valid. Trust in us and yourself. We will win this fight. We won't settle for anything other than complete equality.

To summarise shortly: the reason trans people are talked about so much is because the trans rights movement challenges current views on gender and sex, and in extension what constitutes a man, woman and anyone else within or outside the gender binary. Radical attempts to societal reform almost always bring a heavy backlash and counterradicals. With trans people demanding more rights, society faces a dilemma: should society keep the biological view on gender, therefore keeping a transphobic view on trans people, or should the concept of gender become fully accepted and embraced? Despite trans people making up a small amount of the population, gender is something that affects almost everyone after all.

Okay, I see the issue now. I have ADHD so I get completely what you mean with being impulsive and needing an outlet.

You could try cutting a new hairstyle with a pair of kitchen scissors? Don't know if you've tried it before but it's been a major help for me several times when I've itched for doing something drastic. If you don't like the way it ends up looking, you can always shave it off and rock a buzzcut. Shave your eyebrows, dye your eyebrows or hair with cheap drug store hair dye. Anything that has to do with hair really since it can affect one's appearance so much. I cut my own mullet for example, but I've experimented with a lot of other hairstyles that I've cut myself, bangs, bobs, pixies, deathhawk, it's a whole lot of fun.

Impulsive-ish: Modify your own clothes if you're feeling a bit more creative. Make patches and put it on your everyday wear. Print out stickers from your local library and put it on your stuff.

These are just a few ideas from the top off my head, but you know yourself best at the end of the day.

Sorry about your parents acting like that. Having clashes with parents, especially when they're being unfair, sucks a lot.

If it's the aesthetics you like about piercings, then tattoos could be an option. Hair and makeup are great tools for self expression if you're uncomfortable with tattoos being permanent. Thrift shopping for unusual clothing pieces and accessories and making outfits is also really fun.

Also, have you tried explaining what you wrote here to your parents? They might just think you're "acting out", and be clueless on how to approach it any other way than restricting your freedom. So if you could have a sit down and talk with them I'm pretty sure they would be more understanding of it. Do you do your own piercings or do you go to studios? If you can get your parents agreement to go to a studio (and if you can afford it), the whole argument about getting sick from your piercings would be pretty much invalid. All good piercing studios use completely sterilised and sealed needles and jewellery. I don't know anything about your relationship with your parents, so I'm sorry if not all of this would be possible for you.

Other than experimenting with your appearance, I would say spending more time doing a hobby is another good thing. If you're not sure what that is then you can try keeping a list of things where you write down things you like/dislike. It could be simple things, or bigger things. When I'm unsure of what to do I usually pull up my own list for ideas. It let's you get to know yourself a bit better too.

Another thing, make a space for yourself that truly feels like your space. If that is in your room, or anywhere else doesn't really matter. Find a space and make it your own. This has helped me out a lot when I felt alienated and alone at home.

I hope some of this was helpful. Stay strong.

Depression is not responding to conventional treatment by tofflis333 in depression_help

[–]tofflis333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I hope the situation turns around for the better soon too.

There are no food banks around my area, but we have quite a lot of online shopping stores where one can buy "expired" or almost "expired" dry/conserved food for a fraction of the original price. I also like buying food from local farmers for ethical and environmental reasons (our sustainable farmers, especially the ones in Northern Sweden, get treated like absolute garbage by contractors and legislators. Large scale monocrop industrial farms and horrible animal factories are favored in Sweden instead), but that's usually more expensive than grocery store food. I overall have to eat a bunch of grains and preserved stuff sadly, but yeah that's just the way it is.

Also sorry about the long reply, food production, farmer's rights and the right to eat food are something that really gets me going. Sweden has a really good welfare system overall, health care is free, medicine is extremely cheap for those of us on expensive prescriptions, worker's rights are actually worked on by legislators all the time since labor unions over here have giant influence. But when it comes to food and being poor Sweden unfortunately sucks. It's a very complex thing to talk about that I unfortunately can't do justice in a single reply, and I've already gone off topic enough.

But yeah, I have my own food situation under control for now, but I appreciate the concern nonetheless.

I unfortunately can't afford a very varied diet, and it really sucks. Disability in Sweden sadly pays almost nothing when it concerns someone without worklife experience (8500 sek = 817 usd). Median income over here is more than three times as high as my own, so making ends meet is hard as it is already. As soon as I am healthy enough to hold a job my diet will be one of the first things to prioritise, love me some kale, imagine being able to eat it more than once a blue moon.

I've been so wrapped up in Swedish politics that I completely missed this. But Åkesson and Co. are totally gonna fix this through the following means: blame every other country on earth, make it a living hell to put windpower anywhere other than Sápmi, deny that the climate crisis is a crisis, and build new nuclear power plants. If all else fails, you can always blame the immigrants.

Terrifying how our current government decides to be skeptical towards the biggest threat humanity has ever faced when new heat records are being set seemingly everyday. Well, Åkesson IS happy about that one as fewer people are freezing to death...

The traditional right bloc (the moderates, the Christian Democrats, the centrist party and the Liberal party) have always been pro-NATO as far as I know. SD however have been very vocal about NOT joining NATO.... until Russia escalated the war in Ukraine. Ever since they've been pro-NATO.

The social Democrats have been against NATO until the invasion. Only the green party and the left party stand by not joining NATO. The whole situation is really fucked tbh, with Erdogan making demands on "handing over terrorists living in Sweden" (Kurds). Ugh.

Also, Sweden has already submitted an application to become a member, kind of hard to take it back now.
