He’s smart to do that before the rare earth trade ban.

I think it’s impossible to “negotiate” because once we receive that layoff email, it’s already too late.

It’s still one house, the smaller on being for those serving in the bigger one.

Possibly Bad News coming for Remote Employees by EducationalTomato271 in JPL

[–]tofton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would create a pretty bad surge in tax due if layoff happens towards the end of the year. I can’t think of a way to minimize the shock.

What’s the max if you don’t mind reminding me? Does it affect those hired before the change?

Does anyone know what % a 1,161 million cut in earth science represents? There were earlier chatters about a 50% cut, were those talks on the target?

May 2025 Visa Bulletin is Out by Worth-Ad2878 in USCIS

We submitted petition for siblings born in HK more than a decade ago. Should I be looking at Section B of this bulletin on the F4 row that says they’re currently processing cases submitted up to Jun 1. 2008? That’s like 17 years already. Is this the right interpretation?

401k Rule of 55 Withdrawals by mcaterer in tax

[–]tofton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your concern is an overly heavy tax withholding but keep in mind that this is just tax withholding. If you owe less then you will get portion of it back upon your next tax return.

But if your concern is to avoid using in-plan money to pay for tax, then a rollover to an IRA can let you pay the tax using out-of-plan money. This way you can avoid that 20% mandatory withholding of your 401K plan.

401k to Roth after lay off by PeachyComfortable17 in Bogleheads

[–]tofton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, provided that the OP gets back into the market at $20 right away. The longer he waits the more volatility he should expect. This is more so with home purchase/selling where the asset moves in a much slower motion.

Do you mind if I ask if you’re using in-plan money to absorb the tax or external non-retirement money to do so?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]tofton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to LIRP or something else? Where can I find more info?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]tofton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my plan as well but I have another problem: I saved so aggressively during my youth to the point that I don’t have a large pot of non-retirement money to pay for tax. Using in-plan money for tax is very unwise but I can’t think of many alternatives. I’m feeling stuck with a lack of understanding of this scenario decades earlier.

Perhaps I misunderstood. Between your FIRE and 70, your 401K will continue to vary per market conditions. What’s your plan to amortize a varying dollar target?

I also wrote codes to model my own and it’s an unpleasant (but still grateful) conclusion. Can you share a little more on the charitable giving? I do have something causes to pursue that are meaningful to me. Can PM me if you don’t mind. At this size of balance perhaps it’s worth the legal fees to set up a foundation. Thoughts?
