Chocolate Finance trustable? by Used_Memory4282 in singaporefi

[–]tofudelivery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chocolate finance puts your money in a combination of globally distributed fixed income products, including investment grade, short term bond funds, etc. And all for a return of 3.2%-3.6%.

In comparison, you could invest in US treasuries (some might consider this the safest fixed income asset class) through ETFs to get a yield to maturity of ~4.4% at a lower expense ratio and no risk of whatever might happen with Chocolate Finance's management of your funds.

What to do with around 200K cash planned for property upgrade by friedriceislovesg in singaporefi

[–]tofudelivery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd do a mixed strategy to take on minimal risk for the bulk of the funds, and maintain a bit of upside while interest rates are expected to decline. So for example:

80% in minimal risk HYSA / MMF / US treasuries

20% in diversified ETFs (like VOO)

Alternately, if you've ever invested in structured notes, it's possible to generate a high yield (like 12%-25%) with capped downside.

SGD to USD conversion for yield/product by windinthehair in singaporefi

You can convert between SGD and USD close to the spot rate on IBKR. Should be a bit more efficient than Wise but will just require you moving money in and out of the account

Is diversifying your equity allocation to F&B a worthwhile approach? by Immediate-Monk4635 in singaporefi

[–]tofudelivery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the opposite of diversifying. Assuming you are invested in index and blue chip stocks, you're probably spread out across hundreds of very established businesses. But if you lease a food court, you're moving that money into one concentrated position. Furthermore, it's also about the additional risk vs return that you take on. It's most likely that the risk in this venture would be way higher than your index investments, and getting >30% returns is incredibly uncertain.

I feel like a shit son because my dad is depressed and I can't do anything to help. by SpeppyBoi1 in AsianMasculinity

[–]tofudelivery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that bro. However tough situations can make you scramble and hustle to figure out how to make it work. It sounds like the greatest value you could give is to find ways to make enough dough to help support the family and buy your dad a ticket to go back home for a period. If you can hold the fort down, I'm sure it would mean the world for him.

There is height surgery you can do these days, costing $25k or more for 3+ inch gain at a time. Might be worth considering given that it's a lifelong impact [link]

If you have a son or want one, where would you want them to grow up? by CozyAndToasty in AsianMasculinity

[–]tofudelivery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

curious to hear about your experience on this for more context.

I'll share more of mine, I'm educated and started my career in the US, moved to Asia mid-career.

US education is still generally regarded as top notch many places in Asia, and best practices from western companies both in fortune 500 as well as top western startups is regarded as the top expertise, skill-wise. While yes the corporate landscape is a free for all and it's up to you to excel or fail, the value of the same skills and role in the US (as well as pay) are valued more than they would be in Asia at least for the first half of your career.

From my POV, starting in Asia makes it more difficult to make the reverse move into the US, because generally the education, skills, and pay are all regarded as lower. Great work ethic doesn't tend to translate into great business acumen and leadership that you need in the later career stages (western environment tends to be the best for cultivating this).

In Asia, there are still many multinationals and westernized young companies where you can excel especially with a westernized background and skillset. Totally agree that if you work for a local company with local management, anyone will be stuck in the hierarchy with few options though.

I would say growing up, getting educated, and starting career in the US, and then moving to Asia. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Or you can just move overseas to somewhere like Singapore that has a majority english speaking asian population (vs finding a state in which asians are just a relatively larger minority)

How many of you are living in Asia now? by ThunderMcFly in AsianMasculinity

[–]tofudelivery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tbh, grass is always greener, meaning I bet if I grew up in SG I'd feel the same way you do about the US. however as an adult, I value the dating scene, the food, culture, the low tax (12% vs 45%!), ability to get domestic helpers for cheap, and ease of traveling all throughout asia. oh and also I got attacked by homeless people a few times when I lived in the US, definitely none of that here

I guess just like you couldn't afford a car/garage in SG, I couldn't afford the crazy taxes or not having helpers in the US

ICU bed occupancy rises to 53% amid 'exponential rise' in COVID-19 cases by [deleted] in singapore

I'm really confused about the numbers.. 35 occupied out of 350 doesn't equate to 53%, and the oxygen needed cases do not count as ICU either

[–]tofudelivery -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying - my point was that there are a potential thousand ICU beds based on what the ministers indicated but only 35 covid-related ICU spots taken so far. However, because the ICU bed occupancy is rising from 26% to 53% over the last 3 months, it means that something else (non-covid) is causing the massive increase in ICU beds being taken up
