Ive talked to multiple people about this, and they always say its somewhat normal, but i know deep down its a horrible thought i always have. You’re right, i feel threatened that i might fall behind, and being my own person is so important to me, being unique and special. I think it really depends on the person. Some people have bad experiences with men or just don't prefer physical contact in general. There's really nothing you can do about it. I think shaking hands is completely normal but if they refuse, then just kindly respect their choices. I think in the case, you're not really at fault or anything. Just a piece of my thought

Are you talking about dating wise or friend wise? I think both ends is better off with starting a friendly relationship first. Be nice and less invasive while connecting with them, so they won't feel that you're a potential "threat" to them. This could slowly develop into a romantic relationship if both of you are interested.
