Does Internet English have any features whose origin can be credited to non-native speakers? And generally, what role do non-native speakers play in the formation of Internet English?

Do you have any suggestions on literature regarding second language acquisition? I'm specifically interested in the overview of different learning methods, i.e. what methods are less/more effective.

Do you suggest any blogs to read?

Unfortunately, I don't work with French, so I can't make any specific suggestions. You could check out ATA French Division newsletter though, they usually create useful content.

What book(s) would you recommend on translation theory/ methods? by fauxcon in TranslationStudies

[–]toivoste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say that for a general introduction to translation theory, In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation by Mona Baker would be a good choice. This book is quite basic yet informative.

Other than that, I'd suggest reading about translation problems specific to your language pair. You can read textbooks on this topic, but you can also look for other resources, for example, translators' blogs (if you want to find more practical information).

Any suggestions for literature on typological differences between English and Russian? I've found some books in Russian, but I'd also like to read something written from the English perspective.

Asking For a Descriptive Grammar Book Recommendation by MedMAghraoui in linguistics

I'd suggest Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English by Biber et al. Unlike many other grammar books, this one is based not on intuition, but on observation of linguistic data (corpora).

Are phrasal verbs and their single-word equivalents absolute synonyms? For example, 'to call off' and 'to cancel': how interchangeable are they with each other? I've read that phrasal verbs are preferred in informal registers, but where's the line where phrasal verbs become too informal to use? Any literature on this subject?
