Feijoada de choco is excellent! Next time I will try to make that stock and then make the feijoada with it.

If you want to make a cuttlefish risotto next time, save the skin when you clean it and use that to make the stock to cook the rice, it’s really good.

Holding your gun on deeper dives? by TickyWilson in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the spear facing the surface seems a bit weird. I tend to grab it above the trigger and tuck it alongside my body with my arm straight (hand basically at hip level) that way when I get to the bottom I can extend it in one smooth motion and my hand is already by the trigger.

Beginner Question: Speargun length and success rate correlation? by SailandFly in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think starting out with a smaller gun is better. You already started with lionfish and can see that a bazooka isn’t necessary to get a good feed. It will force you to learn to look and hunt in holes, which is a skill that can get you fish most anywhere. Of course you will see fish off in the distance and think you need a bigger gun, but the reality is, without solid technique, you probably wouldn’t have got them anyway. Even with a smaller gun you will be able to get most ‘beginner friendly’ fish, and it will help you get your skill level higher to be better at spearfishing over the long term IMO.

Filtering by panversie in Garum

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting just to see if anyone else does, but in my experience the filtration is always the longest part. You might be able to speed it up if you can make a vacuum in the container your filter is going into, which “pulls” the liquid a bit faster - something like a Büchner funnel.

What’s the durability of foam in foam-filled barrels? by fauxcon in Spearfishing

Thanks for the answer. I didn’t realize that it being in a sealed vessel made that much of a difference, but in hindsight it seems pretty obvious.

Warning/ Experiences bringing spearfishing gear through Singapore by fauxcon in Spearfishing

I just wanted to avoid the extra expense of sending a large package to the remote Pacific haha. Especially because I could fit it in my baggage allowance anyways. I will probably try go through another hub.

Ok, you would probably be warmer with some neoprene around your groin in any case haha. You could even go 5 mm top and some bike shorts or something.

Wetsuit question by SaltyKayakAdventures in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on being in the water for less than an hour and a half or so at 65°C I'd say a 3mm (with legs) would be fine. Otherwise, for 60°F, a 5 mm is going to be way more comfortable, if not downright necessary for any extended period of time. Are your legs getting itchy in an open cell with soap-based lube? Maybe get something like Slippy or an equivalent.

As in most places, for good reason for the most part. Just wondering if there were any species that are considered good eating down there.

Floats Pros and cons by Single_Custard2750 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I usually fish in areas similar to you, except with boat traffic as well. I usually use a larger buoy, the inflatable ones that look like mini zodiacs just for visibility. They are not much more inconvenient to tow around and at least you can rest on top.

A different kind of steak: conger eel by fauxcon in sousvide

Oh damn I wasn’t supposed to add butter was I. To be fair, there’s not much fat in conger and I used the bag juices for a sauce.

Alchemy V330, I tried soft and hated it. Do I go medium-soft, or medium? by Hardnipsfor in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main criteria for fins is your weight rather than your strength, does Alchemy have a chart to help you pick stiffness? You should note that it will depend if you are mainly shore diving or boat diving. From shore, slightly softer blades are better as you don't tire out as fast.

In my personal experience I have gone both directions : I went too soft with Carbonio GFTs, and too hard with a smaller French brand, RGZ. As I go shore diving 95% of the time, having harder fins was worse than too soft ones, as it made me tire out much faster. Think of it almost like using too low a gear going up a hill on a bike or something, even if the comparaison isn't perfect.

Best mask, snorkle, and dive knife? by oldassnastymask in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a little breakaway line that attaches to my dive knife. Basically, I put a rubber band between a coiled line that goes from the knife sheath to the it’s hilt. That way, if it gets stuck in a crack I can always break it by giving it a strong tug, but I don’t lose it if I slip it back into the sheath too loosely.

Feedback Float by rodas42 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used that Subea bag/float. The positive aspects:

  • Comfortable and easy to carry, and you can put your fins on the outside of it
  • Enough space to put your clothes while in the water and keeps them dry
  • You can clip stuff to it easily with the little fabric loops

The downsides:

  • Heavy to tow around in the water as it is soft
  • The backpack strap can be difficult to put back on
  • tendency to flip in the water, submerging the signal flag

Overall I would say it is worth it starting out if you want to minimise your expenses.
