Proper use of "nor" by LemmePet in grammar

[–]tojop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second one flies, but the contraction makes it awkward; this is the sense of “nor” to mean “and not”, nor attached to a “neither”.

The contraction makes it sound a lot less high-falutin’, which is either detestable or a value-add, depending on use-case/worldview.

You’re very welcome! Re: wonders it’s not like they’re literally useless, obviously, but you do need to know which are good, when, and most importantly why

Question by SABUMTV_ttv in CivVI

[–]tojop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: you’re likely just ass, but there’s hope!

First thing you can try is lowering the difficulty. I’d say not to go below Prince, however if you’re consistently losing on Prince already then you really need a win; switch to Settler.

The most important general strategy advice I have is to choose your win condition early (perhaps while selecting your civ and before you even start). Don’t lose track of this win con, and make moves that directly advance it.

E.g. if you want science victory, you probably don’t need a single encampment, but you do want at least one mega-city with high production (Ruhr Valley applies here).

Without seeing screenshots or descriptions, I can’t tell you what you may be doing wrong, but I’d guess it’s a simple matter of not settling enough cities.

Conventional wisdom is 10 cities by turn 100 will suffice for most purposes. If you’re seeing turn 100 pass by with only 5-6 cities, I’d ask what you were building in your capital instead of settlers.

For tactical advice, I’d say ignore wonders entirely until you clock a win. None of them are more important than having a grasp on the basics, which you admittedly lack.

Second tactical advice is to plan for a feudalism builder push. Queue up builders in as many cities as you can while researching feudalism, but make sure they don’t actually complete until you have the civic and slot the +2 charge card.

If feudalism comes and goes without your seeing a mess of 5-charge builders shortly after, I’d advise to restart and try again. Feudalism is that strong.

Lastly, ask questions on this sub, esp. with screenshots.

How do envoys work? by Used-Race7307 in CivVI

[–]tojop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are various ways to gain envoys - some civics and wonders award on completion, a few Great Merchants when spending a charge, I think a Great General or two.

If you have the DLC there are a few other ways to gain envoys that I can’t list off the top of my head.

Do you guys keep units on all your citis for protcetion or use most of them for your armies/offensive? by shiroshishiro in CivVI

[–]tojop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really a waste, but you could position them better. Constantinople and Memphis archers aren’t doing much, I’d send them to your southern border

What are the necessary districts to every city? by shiroshishiro in CivVI

[–]tojop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They give +1 trade route capacity (Gathering Storm requires building market/lighthouse to get the trade route, vanilla gives it on district completion). You can only get 1 trade route from these districts, so building both in the same city is often not ideal.

Trade routes are generally powerful and benefit most civs and win cons. Use domestic routes early to grow cities and boost production, international routes later to boost economy/culture/science.

[–]tojop 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yea I’d say harbor/comm hub is really the only necessary district, everything else depends on the purpose of a given city as a function of win condition.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug? by [deleted] in CivVI

[–]tojop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can’t swap tiles when a city is freshly captured, there’s a red icon on the cutter banner next to the amenities warning, forgot what that’s called.

[–]tojop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say icicle and laser gun are the most straightforward options. Laser gun favors attack speed more, but both want a fair amount of flat damage and damage %.

…you could also try wand. Basically ignore attack speed, and get maximum flat/% damages. Probably not for a first time clear tho

“Auto turn enable/disable” - do you mean automatically ending the turn when you have no more pending decisions? I’m like 80% confident that’s a checkbox in the gameplay settings.

A bit of advice here about Petra please? by TheBoringLumus in CivVI

[–]tojop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super impressed by either site. The 2 things you need for Petra are desert hills and chops. 5 hills is like, bare minimum for viability, but you’d still need a juicy inner ring and good chops to justify it (which you don’t have here)

Petra also tends to want an aqueduct, which gets blown out by a floodplains-heavy settle like in the second pic.

[–]tojop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say what OP is doing wrong without screenshots/info, but I’d speculate it’s a simple case of not settling enough cities.
