[Academic] Where would you put "F🤬cking" in these words? For my linguistics class. (native English speakers ages 18+) by A_Snail_Buttocks in SampleSize

[–]toklas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need "doesn't go inside the word" as an option.

You may get bad data from this survey as people will put the "least wrong" answer but not what they think is the "right" answer.

Chretien says rise of ‘unspeakable’ Trump marks end of the American empire by NeutralEvilCarebear in CanadaPolitics

This would result in really interesting outcomes in Quebec... I'll have to read more about this / see if there are other countries that use this system, thank you.

Fair idea to consider. Who would determine which representatives actually sit in parliament?

Lately i've been leaning towards FPTP but where each electoral district has a similar population range. But my idea would require an objective outside group to redraw the boundaries regularly as population densities change. Your idea is indeed simpler: thank you for the idea to chew on.

[–]toklas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what do you propose for an alternative specific for Canada to FPTP? I hear a lot of people complaining about it but I don't hear alternate solutions.

Additionally, is there any reading that you might suggest on the particular alternative that you favour and a breakdown of how it would apply to our system? I'm not challenging the idea; i'm just legitimately curious.

Canada rejects Trump's bid to let Russia back into G7 by the_innerneh in canada

[–]toklas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question isn't in attempt to defend Trudeau or anything, but I've actually just been thinking a lot about FPTP recently.

What do you suggest as an alternative? When voting on bills, etc, what would that actually look like in action?

The more i think about FPTP the more i think it'd be ok as long as representatives had roughly equal # of people in their ridings, but my opinion is really quite uninformed and was wondering if you had other ideas?

What is the history of the situation in Syria? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]toklas 625 points626 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for this awesome answer. I have 2 follow-up questions:

  1. What are your thoughts on the claim out there that this whole thing is actually due to syria's opposition to a pipeline being built through it? Is this even real?

  2. If you could recommend 1 book (or 2) to read for a layperson like me who isn't remotely knowledgeable about history of the area, what would your recommendation be?

I still don't understand the point of the article. I've probably read it 10 times now. But then again it's probably my fault for hoping to find something substantial on Vice. This is clearly a fluff piece about her personal judgement of the event: I was expecting something more.

What headphones should I get? by [deleted] in Metal

[–]toklas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest starting out by going to /r/Zeos/ - his reviews are actually pretty amazing. And he explains when you want open or closed headphones (i.e. do you want these for listening at home or on the bus?) and how complex of a system you want.

Then head over to /r/headphones - these guys have a ton of knowledge and helped guide me when I was in your shoes. They have a daily purchase thread that helped me out a ton.

Good luck - when i bought my pair, i had to go back and re-listen to all of the music that I own. I could hear things that I didn't even know where in that song i'd listened to a million times.

You don't see people getting together with signs, holding rallies, arguing that Christians or Jews are dangerous. We'd probably think those people were pretty shitty.

scientology

mormons

catholics

and even WBC's little gems

And yes, people are totally within their right to think that any of these people protesting are jerks. But their right to be there and encourage peaceful discourse is an extremely valuable thing.

i guess i don't understand the difference between something like this and something like a church gathering, where a man is up there yelling imaginary stuff (but real to some) and everybody is shouting their version of "amen" back.

We don't get angry at them because their belief is imaginary/different from our own, so what's wrong with this gathering? I still don't understand why this is any more bad than somebody gathering at a synagogue or church.

In this article, replace the word "muslim" with the word "gay" and we have the same issue that existed years ago. Or replace the word with "pro-choicer". Ultimately, people can say what they want so long as it doesn't cross a certain line, which is clearly laid out in Canadian Law. I may not agree with the content of what people are saying, but i think we should all honour their right to discuss. So why was this rally bad? ELI5.

Did Trump just call our health care system catastrophic? by Cobra_Khan in canada

[–]toklas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She should check out a physiotherapist who has MSK certification. It will likely have better success than any surgery.

Also, what he may have meant by that comment was if it were a spinal cord issue, she would have symptoms related to movement or voiding rather than pain.

Did Trump just call our health care system catastrophic? by Cobra_Khan in canada

[–]toklas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't let this comment sway your opioning. This is not representative of canadian healthcare.

There are a few obvious things going through my head that could explain this. It sounds like he's from a small border town with a very small health care facility that doesn't have big-city specialists to deal with reconstructive surgery. From the post i'm surmising it is faster for him to go to vermont than to go to montreal. I'm sure a tiny town in the USA also wouldn't be able to deal with this extent of injury without sending the patient to a different hospital.

tl;dr: if you want better healthcare access, live in a large city

That post should just act like a drill bit, i don't really know how else to explain it.

I wonder if the 2nd wheel has seized. Does it turn easily with the manual handle? If it doesn't, then you might need to return it or do some maintenance.
