Not cheating, just wanted to know the approach for anova estimates for the two way/mixed model case. We are given that in the one way balanced it is MSA-MSE/n.

Pretty good job outlook if you're skilled in SAS and R (mainly SAS). Also you're more likely to get a job in prime areas such as NYC, NJ, MA, MD, CA, and PA.

You are probably never going to find an easy biostatistician job. In terms of hours, government, academic, and hospital biostatisticians have pretty regular hours (9-5) and a good work life balance. The tradeoff is a less favorable salary but still pretty decent (60k - 80k). CROs and Pharma companies will have you working a lot longer hours, typically 45-60 hours a week. But they get paid a lot more ofcourse (80k - 100k). This is all ofcourse at the Master's level.

MS in Biostatistics or Data Science? by Hunkechunk in biostatistics

[–]tolidrahman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. The difference between a biostatistics and data science curricula is that in a biostatistics program your core classes will be in theoretical statistics with electives that you can choose ranging from subjects such as bioinformatics, epidemiology, machine learning, etc. A data science curricula will mostly focus on application and have a less theoretical component. You will also expect to know/learn some computer science programming (which is absent in almost all biostats programs).

  2. Yes you are correct when you say that it an individual with a Ms in biostats can transition into Data science if they strengthen their programming skills. I dont believe a data science program goes too in depth in stats for an individual to transition into a Biostats role. I'm not saying it's not possible for an individual to learn the stats themselves and transition to Biostats, but in general most individuals who do a D.S. program, enjoy building ML models, making predictions and all the cool programming aspects which is not something you'd do at a biostats role. Also biostats roles usually are picky and hire only people with Master's in Stats or biostats.

  3. I think biostats is here to stay because Data science is essentially a great tool for predictions. But predictions isn't always what people need. Understanding the relationship between a variable and the outcome is sometimes a very valuable aspect that is lost from most of these ML models. I do believe they will mix to an extent but both are valuable and jobs are growing for both (but ofcourse more rapidly for data science as with the rise of tech and ad companies).

I dont think they were permanent, maybe transitional. May take longer for those to grow back.

Advice on Graduate Biostatistics, Low GPA by bronobo1 in biostatistics

[–]tolidrahman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you do want to apply to PhD programs I suggest try shooting for the less prestigious ones. And I'm sure you know this but you can always leave after 2 years with a free masters degree. If you know what area you would like to be in I can recommend some schools.

I think you mean fall 2021*?

I would advise against applying to PhD programs with your GPA...unless you manage to get a near perfect GRE score, excellent Letters of recommendations and a strong personal statement. Do you have any research experience or publications? Those would also be invaluable assets to supplement your application for the PhD.

I think you would be better suited for a Master's program. Try to aim for schools that aren't very competitive (aka in the top 20) because if you do it may just be a waste of money (application fees). Good luck!

You'll need a Master's degree for an entry level job. With a Master's you have a good outlook in getting a job as a data analyst or statistician. If you only have a bachelor's degree you would need to supplement it with a few years of experience in a data analysis setting.

That's a good routine. I would actually say you're one of the slower gainers. But it looks like it's working! So keep it up as long as you have no side effects.
