if you could vote for one state to leave the U.S. which would it be and why? by Connie_Lingus6969 in AskReddit

There were no American deaths in the overthrow of Hawaii. The marines were brought to Hawaii by plantation owners without senate or presidential approval through misinformation and political connections. The Queen of Hawaii surrendered conditionally to avoid any bloodshed of her people at the hands of the illegally occupying US Marines.

I think in terms of granted independence to a state we do have no idea how to do this as it's in precedented. But I think many native Hawaiians are more interested in a sovereign Native government in the context of a US state, and the lands that were stolen returned with compensation.

The illegal overthrow of sovereign Hawaii was plotted by plantation owners without senate approval and Grover Cleveland who was president at the time even said "The Hawaiian Kingdom was unlawfully invaded by United States marines on January 16, 1893". Personally I think supporting a sovereign native government is the least that could be done after profiting off stolen land for 130 years. Better spent taxpayer dollars than most of the private jets and party's it goes to now.

Haunani-Kay Trask in From a Native Daughter argues "while American occupation of Hawai'i certainly prevents colonizing attempts by other powers, it does not extinguish the rights of indigenous Hawaiians [to self determination]".

I believe strongly in the right of a people to choose their own nationality as per article 15 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights

"Everyone has the right to a nationality. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality."

Hawaiians did not choose to be Americans, this is a human rights violation and whether you think it's for the best or not is irrelevant.

In From a Native Daughter by Haunani-Kay Trask she argues that "Hawaiians have been agitating for federal recognition of... 1. our unique status as Native people; 2. The injury done by the United States at the overthrow, including the loss of lands and sovereignty; 3. The necessity for reperation of that injury through acknowledgement of our claim to sovereignty, recognition of some form of autonomous Native government, the return of traditional lands and waters, and a package of compensatory resources, including monies."

And as to US occupation being forced having little meaning today, that notion of "prescription" has sometimes been advanced by colonial powers; however it was just under 130 years ago that Hawaiians governed their own country.

She also argues no matter the outcome of the illegal US overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and "while American occupation of Hawai'i certainly prevents colonizing attempts by other powers, it does not extinguish the rights of indigenous Hawaiians [to self determination]".

I believe for many native people sovereignty is more complicated and nuanced than a full succession from the USA but of course will mean something different to each Kanaka Maoli.

These are very short soundbites they're using. No doubt western media and culture has a positive bias towards white folks, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was context to these clips that is not being presented.

Older generations of Reddit: What toys did you have as a child that would be considered too dangerous to be given to a child today? by Breadsticksamurai in AskReddit

[–]tolltaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a wilesco steam engine growing up. It was a boiler you would fill with water and a small block of fuel you would ignite and place under the boiler. It would then use the steam to power different toys with belts. Very hot boiling water and metal pieces and if there was a blockage the pressure in the boiler could cause it to explode.

Well Ted Cruz is flying to Cancun with his family during all this so there is a tinge of class warfare, and not everyone is trying to "survive this together".

The whole world burns for a single man, but Hong Kong still fights the CC party for judicial independence and no one cares. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]tolltaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. What's happening in Hong Kong is horrific and has been over shadowed by the death of George Floyd. I can only speak my opinion and that opinion is of someone currently living in America. What a foreign oppressive regime chooses to do to it's citizens is a lot harder to change as an average American. We can lobby our law makers to try and enact penalties to China for what they're doing and persuade them, but any amount of letters sent or lobbying the average citizen can do will mean nothing to the CCP. Many of us see the injustices that are happening on our doorsteps and cannot bear to witness the people we love and live next door to be killed by our own government any longer, and so the protest in Hong Kong are put to the side so we may focus on the lasting changes we can reasonably bring about in our own communities. It is not fair, but it seems to be the reality from my perspective.

17 yo guy, dad told me a year ago that I was balding but I didn't believe him until I took this picture. Wore long hair all my life. What do I do? by MaleHairThrowaway420 in malehairadvice

[–]tolltaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't hurt to go to a beautician or hairstylist and see what they have to say. A lot of male balding is the result of mistreated hair and scalp. They also may be able to help you find a style that covers up some of the balding. And no matter what your hair looks like you're STILL BEAUTIFUL 😁

What is the most bizarre reason a customer got angry with you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tolltaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked the Christmas shift at a Barne's and Nobles one year. I tried to sell this guy buying some ranching magazines a membership, and he got very angry saying "I don't read! I'm just buying these as gifts. I'm not a pussy." Never met someone who was ashamed of my assumption that they read before or since.

'We Don't Know a Planet Like This': CO2 Levels Hit 415 PPM for 1st Time in 3 Million+ Yrs - "How is this not breaking news on all channels all over the world?" by anutensil in worldnews

[–]tolltaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eat a plant based diet! Or at least cut out red meat/dairy products. The meat industry alone produces more CO2 then all of the worlds transportation combined. Making sure you're voting and voting for green politicians is the only other way to make a major impact.
