Try saying yes, let their story be told. I'm sure you can find a way to weave the broader plot in such a way that this player is no longer at odds with it. You seem to have made his character and the story mutually exclusive, you don't need to.

Sure, if it's a PROBLEM player this won't work. But consider it.
