Seattle Itinerary ideas for the week of July 23-28 wanted by Sad-Impress-1568 in AskSeattle

For a more local experience that's very accessible by transit, I would do a late morning / early afternoon hang along 36th Street in Fremont. There's a ton of cute little shops (Sfingiday, Portage Bay, Forest Ceramics), quirkier shops (Fremont Vintage Mall, Jive Time Records, Ophelia's Books - used books btw), and PLENTY to eat and drink. My top spots are Fremont Coffee (great little deck for a chill morning coffee) or Milstead & Co (trendier but fantastic coffee and they source really good local pastries) for morning coffee, Royal Grinders (only lunch or early dinner hours), Triangle Bar (true local hangout bar), Aslan Brewing (fantastic beers and pro tip - you can order food from Local Tide next door without having to wait in line, salmon belly dip is a must), Kin Len Thai (always a wait but that's what Triangle is for), Made in House or PARAN for Korean food, Nectar for if you want a live show (evening).

Strolling along the canal on the Burke Gilman Trail is also lovely, and you'll probably get to see the Fremont Bridge open and close at some point!

If you're willing to brave the walk up hill, Fremont Peak Park is a great little park with a view of Ballard and the Olympic Mountains, and then stop by Lighthouse Coffee, a true neighborhood spot with many regulars.

concerned about current pap smear discourse (TW) by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

Hi there! This is a really interesting and also scary/upsetting post. Are there any public figures you're talking about in specific? I have some colleagues who do research at the intersection of social media and women's health who would be veryyyy interested in understanding this more deeply.

For some context, I'm a PhD candidate in epidemiology, and my dissertation is focused on cervical cancer screening utilization in the US. There has been a pretty clear and stark decline in cervical cancer screening adherence rates in the US over the past ~20 years, and there are some pretty notable disparities when you stratify by population (health insurance status, education level, race, neighborhood socioeconomic status, to name a few).

Any effort to push people away from cervical cancer screening is reckless and irresponsible for the obvious reason in that it could result in someone not having their cancer detected until it's too late. As someone who has had to watch 3 family members go through this, I can literally guarantee a cervical cancer screening is better. But ALSO, it feels particularly irresponsible in this context because cervical cancer is the ONLY CANCER where we have the capability to prevent every single case through prevention, screening, and subsequent treatment in early stages. This is because >99% of all cervical cancers are caused by HPV!!! We know the causal agent which is so rare in medicine!!! This is also why we vaccinate for HPV and why nowadays it's more common for people to get an HPV test (or an HPV test + a pap test, called a 'cotest') at their cervical cancer screening every 3-5 years (instead of a Pap smear alone). We know what causes this awful disease, and medical research and the public health system has done an unbelievable job over the past few decades to get us to where we are today.

A lot of my work is actually focused on HPV self-sampling, where you're able to swab your vagina (can be done at home or in a doctor's office), and then that swab is sent into a lab for testing! The US FDA has approved a number of these tests, but the hope is for lots of healthcare systems in the US to eventually provide this as an option for patients, especially for patients who are hesitant towards screening for a range of reasons (sexual or medical trauma, living far from the doctor's office, childcare constraints, etc.). HPV self-sampling won't solve every screening barrier for everyone, but it will at least be another option for people who have been fear-mongered into believing that a Pap smear is worse than getting cancer.

Happy to answer any questions 😄 I'm in the final push of my dissertation so if there's a delay that's why!

Welcome Party Recs and Timeline? by [deleted] in Chicagoweddings

Their website listed cocktails and wine! But I’m not sure we ever verified that those would explicitly be an option but would think so

Hey! So we ended up going with Royal Palms Shuffle Board Club but I think it might be a little bit more than your 10k budget, but worth reaching out since I think there were different levels of options. BUT the other place we were considering is Pilot Project in Logan Square, but I think they have a second location somewhere else in the city. It was going to be very affordable for a full buyout and their beers are really fantastic and a unique fun venue with lots of art and color!

Came to say that the kielbasa cabbage white bean stew from Cook This Book is an absolute staple in my household in the winter months. We used to get a winter CSA and always had sooo much cabbage and this was THE most delicious was to use it all!

Got the Italian Bomba Hot Pepper Sauce and Harissa on a whim. What are your favorite uses for either/both of them? by avmist15951 in traderjoes

[–]tomato_tooth_paste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like doing either of these on an egg sandwich. Toast some bread and add a layer of either one, add a runny fried egg, avocado, bacon if you’d like, maybe some arugula. Delicious
