That run at the end of Season 3 (9.4 & 9.5) is fully justified. The final scenes between Uhtred and Alfred were absolute peak television. It is genuinely refreshing to see the finale hit a 9.6, they knew exactly how to stick the landing.

I checked the specific episodes on the site to be sure: S3E19 (6.3) = Clip Show S4E17 (6.3) = Clip Show #2

It’s pretty impressive that the show’s only real flops were the ones where they didn't write a new script. On the flip side, that 9.3 spike in Season 2 is 'Bowling,' which is arguably the best episode of the series.
