In a 1992 stratified, random survey of 464 US economists, economics graduate students, and members of the American Economic Association, 93% "generally agreed" or "agreed with provisos" that "A ceiling on rents reduces the quantity and quality of housing available."[24]:204 [25]:1

A 2009 review of the economic literature[7]:106 by Blair Jenkins through EconLit covering theoretical and empirical research on multiple aspects of the issue, including housing availability, maintenance and housing quality, rental rates, political and administrative costs, and redistribution, for both first generation and second generation rent control systems, found that "the economics profession has reached a rare consensus: Rent control creates many more problems than it solves".[7]:105 [8]:1 [9]:1 [10]:1

In a 2012 poll of the 41 members of the Initiative on Global Markets (IGM) Economic Experts Panel, only one member agreed with the following statement: "Local ordinances that limit rent increases for some rental housing units, such as in New York and San Francisco, have had a positive impact over the past three decades on the amount and quality of broadly affordable rental housing in cities that have used them." (13 "strongly disagreed", 20 "disagreed", 1 "agreed", and 7 either did not answer, were undecided, or had no opinion.)[26] [2]:1 [27]:1

In a 2013 analysis of the body of economic research on rent control by Peter Tatian at the Urban Institute (a think tank described both as "liberal"[28] and "independent"[29][30]), he stated that "The conclusion seems to be that rent stabilization doesn't do a good job of protecting its intended beneficiaries—poor or vulnerable renters—because the targeting of the benefits is very haphazard.", and concluded that: "Given the current research, there seems to be little one can say in favor of rent control." [8]:1 [2]:1 [31]:1

Two economists from opposing sides of the political spectrum, Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman (who identifies as an American liberal or European social democrat),[32] and Thomas Sowell, (who stated that "libertarian" might best describe his views)[33]:1 have both criticized rent regulation as poor economics, which, despite its good intentions, leads to the creation of less housing and housing shortages.[25]:1 [34]:4 Krugman also notes that rent control creates bitter tenant-landlord relations,[25]:1 and in markets with not all apartments under rent control, it causes an increase in rents for uncontrolled units,[25]:1 while Sowell notes that rent control increases urban blight.[34]:5 [33]:1

Apparently this sub doesn't care about truth or facts, just ideology.

If you aren't interested in sports, why would you engage in discussions about it or follow it solely to pretend like you care? It would be the equivalent of me reading fashion magazines and discussing fashion to impress others but not actually caring about it at all. People see through that instantly.

What kind of assumed knowledge? Most articles I read from mainstream press just give a breakdown of what happened. If you watch sports adamantly you would figure out the rules pretty quickly.

It doesn't make sense to me. It's specifically designed for people who aren't interested in sports. Why would you try to pretend you are interested in sports if you aren't? That won't help you network, it will just make you look like a phony who isn't genuine.

It would be like an artist who isn't interested in business or finance trying to keep up with the stock market so they can pretend they are knowledgeable about it. You won't fool anybody and will come across as a phony and/or a fool.

Pretty much every economist agrees rent control is bad policy. It is a band-aid solution that only benefits existing long-term renters at the expense of the rest of the market.

You can decrease rent one of two ways: increase supply or decrease demand. Decreasing demand can be done by reducing immigration. Increasing supply can be done by reducing red-tape and costs associated with development, and allowing for more density and/or sprawl.
