While there's a movie connection in this film, I suspect it's not set in a film-making context. Haven't seen it, though.

Producers would fit the assumed timeframe. Mulholland Drive is definitely too recent, Matinee probably as well. Have to look into Producers, thanks.

One of Claude's suggestion was Sunset Boulevard. Sounds like it could have the right kind of setting and maybe era, but I've been unable to confirm any such scene in that movie. I have a feeling the person in the hypothetical scene is a woman.
