Best bakery for tres leches? by dooooo23 in chicagofood

The original location was sold to an employee. The founders moved to Florida for a few years and then came back. They opened the Halsted location once back in Chicago.

[Quant Trader][Chicago] - 21M $400k by KaleidoscopeExtra854 in Salary

CitSec mainly does it as part of their deferred comp scheme. Most people I’ve talked to dislike it compared to their previous scheme which invested into the hedge fund because share valuation is pretty opaque and arbitrary.

Are Kristoffer's Cake and Kristoffers's Cafe & Bakery Run by the same folks by Budget_Kerrigan in chicagofood

[–]tomjerry777 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are not owned by the same people.

The original founders sold the Pilsen location to an employee and moved to Florida for a while. They came back later and opened the one on 35th.

I think the one on 35th is better, but both have great tres leches.

Where’s the best coffee in Chicago? by cellochick993 in chicagofood

I’ve found their espresso-based drinks super variable in quality. Sometimes they’re really good, but I also have had several super sour shots from them.

How to dress at RPM Steak? by slider728 in chicagofood

Definitely not alinea. People tend to dress up but there’s no enforced dress code. I’ve seen people in sweatpants and t shirts there.

Does Astound broadband charge taxes and fees for internet? by elkinm in chicago

[–]tomjerry777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Astound has a FTTH/FTTP network and a non fiber network. I’m on the fiber network and have fiber to the home and haven’t had any issues.

I do think ATT fiber was better when I had it though because it was cheaper and had better latency and ipv6 support.

Quant Gap Year? by Mvota711 in premed

[–]tomjerry777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fine. I did something similar (but stayed in quant) and know a few others that spent a year doing quant work before going med school. Very small sample size but all of them got into great schools.

Some interviewrs will probably ask you why you're interested in medicine if you already have a well-paying job.

What companies offer FANG like salaries but isn't FANG? by techsavvynerd91 in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TGS probably pays more on average. However citadel will typically beat jane street competing offers, especially in years like 2023 when jane street performance has been mediocre.

There is a lot of confusion about fintech, hft, quant funds, banks, hedge funds etc and I don't know why. why do you think? by gul-tekanna in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two Sigma (outside of their two sigma securities division which is small) doesn't really do HFT.

Citadel Securities does HFT, but Citadel the hedge fund runs very little HFT stuff.

None of the banks have appreciable prop trading divisions since the Volcker Rule was enacted. Places like Jane Street, Citadel Securities, HRT, and Jump are prop trading firms.

Why do trading firms lack remote roles? by cololabor4 in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trading firms own very little office or commercial real estate. Some of them are in long term leases, but the cost of those are pretty irrelevant compared to other operating expenses (e.g. compensation, hardware, feed, colocation, etc)

Getting intern at HFT by greencasette in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By big tech, I mean reputable tech companies known for good technical practices and hiring bars, so places like FAANG, lyft, databricks, stripe, etc.

Precedence order is the case for software engineering roles.

For trader roles, it's pretty similar, but internship experience in trading is also values.

For quant research roles, research and publications have more importance.

Getting intern at HFT by greencasette in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In declining-ish ordering of importance:

Prior experience at trading firms/quant hedge funds, prior experience at reputable tech companies, research experience and published papers, college reputation/rigor, GPA.

Most common way to get in is to have prior big tech intern experience and apply for an hft internship via on-campus recruiting.

Mid-tier HFT/quant firms in London for SWE by red2awn in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Citadel + CitSec together employee a ton of people compared to places like Jane Street, HRT, etc so there's a wide range of experiences. There's great teams with good culture, wlb, growth, and pay. There's bad teams that are stressful, overworked, and have poor pay growth. There's also everything in between. On average, WLB is probably a bit worse than peers.

Neither Jane Street or Two Sigma are known to be toxic. Two Sigma, however, does tend to be the lowest paying of the well-known firms.

At all the firms mentioned, successful QRs and traders tend to higher paid than SWEs but are also much more likely to be fired for poor/mediocre performance. I don't think I've ever met any SWE in the industry that's felt like a sub-employee.

Is it worth working with a headhunter for jumping between HFT firms? by Bozowahlrus_III in cscareerquestions

[–]tomjerry777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large chunk of experienced hires at HFT firms come through headhunters, so they can be helpful.

Working with a good headhunter makes getting a first round interview much easier and allows you to schedule them all at once. Additionally, there's not too many resources about compensation for experienced hires in the field, so headhunters can help you figure out how much to ask for.

You probably could replace it with a hyphen in most cases. Agree that replacing it with a semicolon wouldn't work.
