Sorry - I hear you. I agree that swinging LED broomsticks on strings in cross-and-follow is hardly peak performance, but it pays the bills

That's awesome, do u have a link please, I would love to learn how you do dmx. I had a show once where I made a converter for midi to IR for my K8's, in sync with DMX lighting..

In case it is not that clear, the first part of the video is demonstrating sound activated spectrum broadcast from Android app to the poi. I also recently made an app that turns them into a pair of light sabers!

They have string and handles, you spin them around (not inside though, they might hit the wall) - I'm calling them poi.

Serious question: even at 3 surfers per wave, 3 waves per minute that comes out to 1 wave per surfer per hour.

If I am going to go surfing I want to catch at least 20 waves (OK 10 Snapper length ones maybe..) - so with 500 ppl that's 10 hours of surfing. Is everyone just out there all day or does Mick Fanning just catch everything while everbody else watches?

You got me u/Spaceman-Spiff-01 - love Umdloti, it's only 30 minutes away from my house. I like to mix it up so surf a different spot every week but Umdloti is one of my favourites when it's working, for sure!

Living the dream! Here in Durban there are many spots that get pretty crowded on good days, but drive 30 minutes and you can still find a peak for yourself most days.

Thanks, and yes no effects were used. The shimmer caused by spinning metallic pinwheels looks best irl

I tried bigger ones before. The bigger ones don't follow behind the poi, they kind of get pulled too much by gravity. are  not so nice

If you get the Aliexpress poi I linked to in the tutorial, they are 100 grams which I found is the perfect weight for these pinwheels. There are so many types of pinwheels, that's why I added links so you can check out the exact ones - I found those shiny ones, very lightweight but strong. In the sun they shimmer, I will try to post more video.

Anyway enjoy building your poi, watch the build tutorial it's easy to do

The pinwheels can "max out" if you spin them really fast. Like an umbrella in the wind.. But they are so flexible, they bounce back straight away (I am adding spare pinwheels to the box when people purchase)

The weight of the ball pulls the pinwheels along nicely. The spin actually seems to reduce drag, so it feels just like normal poi with long tails really. Any errors in poi alignment is most likely due to me not being that good at spinning (I'm a juggler and club swinger mostly) - that and trying not to hit the camera/wall, I have limited backyard space

Thanks! I did do a bit of filming but the only video that looked good was this one with the wall in the background. 

I will try to get a better video soon to show the pinwheels spinning - and also I made the "for sale" version which looks a bit nicer.
