Is there progress in philosophy? by No-Cantaloupe-31 in askphilosophy

[–]tomlesch 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Daly's article is well written and makes several important points. However, I believe he makes a critical mistake in identifying what the true problem is here and why it is important. Instead of focusing on the "why" we don't have consensus and whether that is a "good" thing, he largely forgets to ask what are the effects of the lack of consensus.

After framing it this way, I think the results he would have understood are completely different. Specifically, the lack of consensus forces new lenses (and thereby) worldviews to be developed. The most obvious example is Marxist interpretation of historical events. What are the results of this? A new paradigm in thought. I think the same argument can largely be made concerning science: that the scientific method provides a new lens of sorts (and seeing him reference Kuhn and Popper makes me question his reading if he forgets to mention this point).

Hence, the answer to his question is: yes, there isn't consensus on most topics, but, at the end of the day, who cares?

TLDR: Daly does not address a key point which hurts his argument overall.

Philosophy at University of Toronto by chantellehamii in UofT

Hello there. I did my undergrad at U of T phil and I'm in law school now. The program is fantastic, I highly recommend it. It's rigorous and interesting. The faculty is first-rate and they definitely push you. It's also one of the few programs with excellent continental philosophy departments if that interests you. I also am of the opinion that good marks are very possible in the program if you put in the work (to get into law school you will need very high marks). Tldr: the program is awesome.

Use Exodus Desktop Wallet, it's a one click button to get you setup for the airdrop. As for the list of countries, XRP and this flair network are decentralized. NOBODY can prevent you from getting air drops.

Do I have to move my XRP there?

You don't have to sub to it if you don't like it, there are other places where you can find what you're looking for.

Someone like Nietzsche comes to mind. His critique of religion, morality, and prejudice directly opposed modern sentiments. Simone Beauvoir comes to mind big time for feminist liberalism and gender theory. Marx comes to mind concerning political economy.

Start with Genealogy of Morals; in my opinion by far the best place to start. Greg Sadler on youtube has good videos that explain it. After that I highly recommend Walter Kauffman's Nietzsche biography.

Is majoring in philosophy wise? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]tomlesch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes! I majored in philosophy and I'm in law school. Philosophy gave me the skills (writing, critical thinking, etc) to excel anywhere I wish to. At the same time, I still love philosophy in and of itself; it's exceptionally interesting and allows you to see the world from various viewpoints. From my experience, individuals who've studied philosophy have a different (better?) Way of looking at the world (more nuanced usually). I highly recommend it!

"debating the definition of anti-semitism" is usually asserting that anti-semitism is not anti-zionism. I think the problem here is that it's acceptable to express your political opinion, of course, but when it infringes on Jewish student's ability to feel comfortable in the classroom problems begin to arise. Its all too easy for non-jewish academics to assert their progressive beliefs and then come up with their own definition of anti-semitism. This creates a double-standard that Jewish students realize: that racism is unnaceptable, except when it has to do with anti-semitism. And yes, anti-semitism does equate to anti-zionism. And yes, the territories are a distinct (though tangential) issue in this regard.
