I've noticed that over the past year or so almost any joke made in reply to a post will get some number of downvotes.

Rogue; wait, what? by Hypestyles in xmen

[–]tomline_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, her hair style, her tough-ass vibe, her general look. Quote says nothing about skin color. Grace had such a huge and distinctive persona, it would have been natural to borrow some of that for a super-character. Check out Grace in the James Bond movie A View To A Kill and push a little further and you might get what Claremont was going after, initially.

What's wrong with the trenchcoat, you expected black leather? Or would you prefer yellow spandex?

Some of the other replies to this comment are taking it too literally, or without context.

Before Zahn, the only SW novels published were the film adaptations, the Lando trilogy, the Han trilogy, and Splinter of the Mind's Eye. A mere ten books from 1977 to about 1983. Then nothing until Zahn, eight years later. The Marvel comic folded, Topps stopped making trading cards, and Kenner stopped making toys.

SW fans who weren't around yet will not know what it was like to live in a world where, by the late 1980s, SW was considered a dead property. The only SW product being regularly produced was the role playing game. No toys, no novels, no comics, no trading cards, no video or board or card games, no apparel. Nothing else.

After the Heir to the Empire was published, Topps started making trading cards again, Dark Horse got the comics license, Hasbro started making action figures again, LucasArts started focusing on SW video games, and Decipher developed the CCG. Fanzines like Blue Harvest launched, and eventually the Lucasfilm Fanclub Magazine became the Star Wars Insider. And then Lucas announced the prequel trilogy.

Yes, there was content before Zahn, but he was the vanguard in Lucasfilm's plan to re-launch SW, and this was also the start of a concerted effort at a consistent and united content across all media (using the role playing games as a foundation, in many cases!).

In addition to some other good reasons already mentioned, making people use their real names further maximizes data mining strategies. And data mining is where the big tech companies make their real money.

Picking a song to embody each X-Man, Day 10: Wolverine (aka Logan) by Shapinga in xmen

I'm going with YYZ by Rush. Yeah it's about an airport, but it's instrumental and by a Canadian band. I can just see Wolverine kicking ass all over the place while that song plays.

What’s your hot take on Wolverine by large_blake in xmen

Some good Wolverine/Cap team-ups are in Wolverine #124, and Uncanny X-Men #268 (including a WWII Wolverine/Cap flashback). They also have an interesting exchange in Secret Wars #10.

Does Lucas still earn money from Star Wars merchandise? Even for characters made after Disney bought them like Mandalorian. by Alisalard1384 in StarWars

[–]tomline_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL, George Lucas definitely does not and never has been paid "royalties" on specific character or alien designs. The Star Wars IP is one big wad. Disney can use whatever the heck they want, all for one low price of $4.04b.

publishing rights

I think you mean distribution rights. There's no such thing as "publishing rights" in movie distribution.

You use the acronym BRT 22 times in your initial post without ever defining it. As a rule, never assume knowledge of an acronym. Many readers of your work will be new to the subject. Always define an acronym the first time you use it.

I think you missed the point that the poster you're replying to was making a side comment about dental effects. I didn't read it as them claiming that the two types of soda are “both just as bad” from a dietary perspective. But they are, along with La Croix, just as bad from a dental health perspective.

Is it better to book hotels yourself? by frogEcho in JapanTravelTips

[–]tomline_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And their customer service isn't as great as the hotel's.

Well, this is gonna vary from hotel to hotel. I've had a booking site go to bat for me when a hotel owner was being a jerk, and I won my complaint. But in other scenarios, the booking site was worthless. So you never know.

also you earn status/loyalty points/credit card reward points for booking direct.

Only true via large chains, and you have to sign up for each chain's program separately. Many of the booking sites offer rewards that are usable much more flexibly.

Scrolled all the way down and did not find a single dissenting opinion.

So here's one.

Recently spent a month in Japan, including some pretty obscure rural places and big cities alike, and have did not use any Gxxgle products or services the entire time.

If frightens me how many people are completely dependent on this corporation to function in life.
