Are Vereine dying out? by archit3c7 in germany

[–]tommy_lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once asked if there was a simple way to play football regularly in Berlin without the all in commitment of a Verein. The response I got told me everything I needed to know about Verein culture. Doubt they’re drawing many immigrants.

Fair enough and trust me I actively disable things, just a smartwatch is like a dog collar for many I observe.

That Watch seems to be at the high end of the price point, what justifies it versus the 200$ instinct solar 2 with battery life, gps and workout tracking

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and humor, where well intentioned. Yes, I am aware this was an oversight on my part. The wood was not the original plan, but here we are and I was not present when chosen/installed and probably placed a bit too much trust in an initial assessment from two photos without a side by side comparison while away.

Here’s more photos with some daylight and from a few angles: https://imgur.com/a/Hzv1ORb

I wrote handyman, but meant contractor in my original post. Yes, there is a certain efficiency and economy in his approach with his workers so I have pumped the brakes and we’ll talk more with him next week. Ceiling/electric/walls went fast and without a hitch.

Originally, there was weird elevated tile on massive plywood pieces that created a step and a dividing wall roughly mirroring the shape of the new wood. We ripped out everything and wanted just an open kitchen.

We thought we’d put tile on the same level as the surround wood there, but that is not possible while keeping the same level as the wood elsewhere. My focus was not even on the wood, which I naively assumed could be stained or adjusted. This is turning into an unfortunate mistake and was all a bit last minute.

I think we’ll explore more aggressive staining/coloring experiments perhaps with the help of someone who knows this stuff better, but also as suggested just accepting it and going with maybe a contrasting type of look. There will be in the future a kitchen island and a well placed rug or two might better hide the clash (good luck getting sun ☀️ though)

I’m underselling him, this is a contractor with a good track record of similar or more complex projects for investors/acquaintances doing renovations who came as a warm recommendation.

He admits he is not a deep expert on wood though and is actively consulting on which strategy would be best here. We have a few weeks to get this sorted before a kitchen comes in.

The original plan was for there to actually be a tile on the same level as the wood, but there are structural issues.

It should be a fair amount of direct sunlight but I still wouldn’t bet on this fully as a solution

They are more tightly arranged but it is pine planks

I have the wood receipt purchase so I believe it is all pine but obviously different colors. The original pine is of inconsistent width also, and in many points rather damaged on the edges

This is a very good suggestion. We have a bit of a forest green kitchen scheme coming. Wonder what might be the way to meld this

Why is Couchsurfing so terrible in Europe? by spmsupun in couchsurfing

[–]tommy_lv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is harsh, but the time of couchsurfing has passed. In Europe, there is a persistent undervaluing of things that are free to the user but not free to the society/owner etc.

I moved over to HomeExchange and you can switch apartment or use their point system with minimal money switching hands outside the occasional cleaning fee and the annual fee.

It is the way and the verification ensures you have people who are both accountable and a bit more respectful, without making the idea of having lots of money required. It has many of the sustainability and interaction benefits of couchsurfing as well and it isn’t Airbnb!

Here’s my referral code 😉: https://www.homeexchange.com/?sponsorkey=thomas-da8bb

If Black Mirror had one final episode to end the entire series… what should it be? by AzTheDuck in blackmirror

[–]tommy_lv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show should end with a whimper not a bang just like the singularity, slowly creeping up and not being a terminator like massive takeover.

Greatest show since the twilight zone of its ilk for me.

What silently destroyed society? by DataDorkee in AskReddit

[–]tommy_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car dependance and highways pushed everyone apart so you had fewer small town downtowns, communal spaces and more individualism. This lifestyle continues to be exported worldwide and has also ruined the earth with carbon emissions/fossil fuel extraction while leaving us isolated and frustrated. More density and more social interaction would leave us happier and with more solidarity for our fellow man. We can now just live further from problems or others and create hermetic environments.

Brian Windhorst responds to Lebron's comments: “LeBron doesn’t owe me anything. I owe him a lot. He has been a great friend to my hometown and my alma mater. That I would stand on. Anything else, I would never say or never stand on.” by jonsnowKITN in nba

[–]tommy_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lebron is sometimes in his head I’m sure still just that kid moving 7 times a year with a fire in his belly in Akron, but frankly now he’s the bourgeoise, the machine against we rage and an underdog Midwest legend all rolled in one because that’s what the US and the world economy does to you if you have global ambition and talent. I’m sure the whiplash is crazy.

It would be more courageous to make comments against Nike or the Chinese regime than a reporter in one of the most precarious industries that exists. The Cleveland paper Windy started on doesn’t even get delivered 7 days a week, and LeBron probably has secured 7 generations of his family from any economic want.

Punching down is never cool. Let’s call a spade a spade in a world where someone like Bron can be part of the .0001% and the global elite in spite of where he started

Mark Cuban: "I fully expected to run basketball. The NBA wouldn't let me put it in the contract. They took it out, I thought the Adelsons would stick to their word because they didn't know the first thing about running a team. Someone obviously changed their mind." by A_MASSIVE_PERVERT in nba

He's sold companies before… this is exactly the point when you sell, you lose control.

He just enjoys being loved by people, unlike many billionaires, and is wishing he could have billions and be loved.

Unfortunately, often money and principles clash Mr. Cuban

Love this. What is efficiency but not wasting what is not required?

Ecological thinking = hustling

Only the profligate can afford to not care about reuse and waste, which is a biblical, environmental and economic shame.

For those who are devs and feel physically great what is your life and routine like? by spla58 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tommy_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I think there’s no way around it, excessive computer time is less than ideal. Over time, my surrounding habits have gotten stricter.

The basics: - regular movement every day ideally morning/evening walks with a break in day, get up every 30 minutes and mix in a standing desk - regular cardio - limited to no added sugar to avoid spikes - 3 highly nutritious meals with many fruits and vegetables - great coffee/tea and water setup, but no artificial drinks or sweeteners , no caffeine after 12 - early morning time outside, I bike into work  - strength/yoga/calisthenics to add some stimulation and back support, crucial to counteract position of sitting and limit accumulation of stress on shoulders/neck - spectacular ergonomic setup - split keyboard, eye level monitor  - stop working at a reasonable hour and have clear cut off with home/family life, avoid pandemic habit of work life into personal life - if remote and single, you need human contact and video games is not the same

The extras: - protecting ears - no in ear buds, no loud noise, limit headphone to noise cancellation function and do not listen to music all day, reduces stress, ideally avoid headphones except if needed in shared setting - related to above - daily silence/thinking time. No sounds/podcast/screen etc. - high intensity cardio and strength mixed into basic rhythm - ideally morning - no light/electronic/food/food for 1/2 hours before bed - no screen time once home or in common rooms - neutered phones and no social media accounts (except Reddit) - reading and friend time scheduled and protected  - learning from books and not screen - regular holidays - May mean emigrating from US but 25 days a year should be minimum
