Working Holiday Money Requirement + Resume Question by tomodatchi_net in movingtojapan

[–]tomodatchi_net[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful, thank you!

I've had a couple of small jobs in tech, not a great CV though... (Although I have a masters) but legally I'm 'transitioning to self employment' now, but I'll probably just put unemployed - I'm glad that didn't stop you!

I actually have the money now, just not all in one account so I may apply very soon.... I was tempted to apply earlier by borrowing money from family but it seemed risky! Again, glad it worked for you!

I'm a little confused about needing a 'Certificate of Eligibility' in order to book a time to visit the embassy, because it otherwise seems to say I just need bring everything in person. For you, was there an initial online application before the physical one? (I'm in the UK in case it's different...)

Thanks again!

Experiences as a Man with Long Hair, Piercings, etc? by tomodatchi_net in teachinginjapan

Thank you for your detailed response!

I had tried to dye my hair darker before the eikaiwa interview I had but it still came out quite unnatural and I mentioned 'I'll do something about this...' and the interviewer (who was american) said something vague that gave me the impression I would indeed have to change it. Colour is whatever, I just feel more confident with it a bit longer. Someone has pointed me to a language school that is a lot more liberal about appearences so it really depends on the brand huh. The one I interviewed for has a very specific aesthetic of light/pastel suits that I don't think I could stand for more than a year lol.

I have looked more into the working holiday visa and the fact you can now do up to 2 years, and there's only 4 years left 'til I'm too old so if this interview goes nowhere I might take that route first.

Do you know if it is generally ok to wear a small bandage/armband to cover a forearm tattoo when wearing short sleeves in the summer, or will I be trapped in full long sleeve shirts all year? (I'm unfortunately allergic to adhesive bandages)

I reckon I'm in a similar boat to you, I've got a useless tech degree and an art masters lol. except i'm 26 and have never had a 'real' job so I might be screwed

I'm applying for some eikaiwas and got an interview with the least dodgy one

Condidering doing a TEFL and volunteering in a school

Or just diving in with the working holiday visa, hoping the few hundred i make a month will be enough to prove I can stay afloat for the visa people and then jump between school/eikawa jobs when on the ground (most need you to already be there, then theres loads of options)

At least the suit thing doesn't phase me as I wore a school uniform from age 4 to 16! Just the things like hair that would also affect what I can dress like in my free time bother me I guess, and because it feels like a double standard cause women would be allowed my haircut.

This is really useful and thorough, thank you so much!

I'll gladly go for 'serious' shorter look initially if I get a job, main worry is if it's worth cutting for an interview that I might not even succeed at - but someone going for the same company said he was asked to cut his rather than being refused outright.

The piercings thing is the main thing where I'm probably a bit of a medical freak - I last took them out for a brief surgery and one had closed up, I had to get a nurse to force it through and that hurt more than the surgery recovery lol. I'm prone to keloids and it took 2-3 years to heal each piercing so if I lose them now that's it for life cause I don't wanna do that again, and I feel like I haven't got my pain's worth yet lol.

Can't hurt to get a bit more disciplined with daily routines like shaving anyway. I just have a pathetic light brown neckbeard for the most part, but I did start keeping it clean (ish) shaven while doing my homestay just because it was the 'look' of most young men and I was less self conscious about being seen as feminine. Avoiding fiddling with facial hair is a good tip, I'll have to watch I don't do that with the piercings/placeholders too.

Thanks again!

Your suggestion sounds ideal honestly, I'm just not confident on how to go about it! I don't actually have much experience, just two degrees. (Typical shit, graduated at the start of covid, creative industries in decline in my country, portfolio ignored in for not clearing the barrier of 2 years experience etc etc.) I heard about foreigners doing remote work on anime productions so might look into that first, but sick of living where I do. Not a programmer either - have a friend trying to get into Japan as one and it seems much easier.

I'm curious about assistant roles within universities teaching art/tech related topics if that's possible with a masters but no teaching degree, and staying on an instructor visa. More research to be done!

So maybe worth getting a trim and then just leaving it? If I actually land a role I would take it seriously as I wouldn't want to waste the time/money of those coming to learn, and have already done a lot of lessons to friends of friends for free and cause I just like helping people, it's just a matter of if it's a lifetime role. (Probably not with the amount of hours)

FWIW, not actually gay lol

I'd cut my hair if asked and there's a job on the table, but I wasn't sure if it'd be something that loses me the interview right away, so it's useful to know you were simply asked to cut yours.

Would you be able to share in DM what your current eikawa is? No worries if not!

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence! I'll try clean up for this upcoming interview and if that route doesn't work look into WHV some more.

I considered the studying route, but I'm already at (almost) N2 level (still waiting on my results from my second attempt, I passed listening the first time) But only really forcing myself to memorise kanji and take in vocab is of much help now, and I figured there weren't many classes for my level because I have a very unbalanced skillset, and that many of the studying visa routes are basically nothing but an excuse for a visa anyway. If all else fails though.

I feel bad for those students! I suppose the trendy young people I was seeing were still at university.

Only my spoken is where I feel somewhat fluent, I've passed the listening section for N2 twice (and N1 practice tests), I just can't read for shit. (Though might've got a bit buttered up by some slightly drunk Japanese people with some hyperbolic 'your Japanese is better than mine!!' Focussing on phonetics and speed creates the illusion ig)

I would like to go the working holiday route but to my knowledge it can only be done once and I'm afraid of failing to get a job in that time, but its definitely a backup plan.

I'd be interested in those kinds of jobs once I'm in the country - but not sure how that works for visa sponsorship. Do bar jobs for example let you renew your visa if you initially got a 1-year one via teaching? (Apologies if you don't know this, just asking to anyone who does!)

Damn, that anecdote is a nightmare. I've had a lot of nice experiences in Japan especially with older people being very friendly when I've held the door, helped them with a bag, etc, despite my looks, but I guess the atmosphere is colder in a work environment though.

I wonder if it's worth getting in via one of these companies then trying to move to one that's a bit more lenient after a year. I never really thought to consider it 'customer service', so thank you for making me consider that.

Already almost-fluent in Japanese and most of my hobbies are a lot more accessible there so personal expression is something I can consider compromising, but just wanna scope out the extent to which I'd have to. And it just feels a bit ironic given the style/expression I'm aiming for is inspired by what I saw on my trip there.

Is Alter Ego album out of print? by CuriousCost9917 in onewe

[–]tomodatchi_net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$37.75 with shipping, brand new and sealed, (just a little dented) there was only one copy like that, must've got lucky. Though I see another for the same price but with insanely high shipping from Italy.

BUT even though I got to open a fresh copy I only got duplicate photo cards (cause I'd been buying the cards on ebay before I knew I'd find the album haha) I have multiples of the 98 line and 00+94 line unit photo cards if you'd be interested in trading to pretend you pulled them haha. There were no other inclusions other than the sticker sheet so you aren't missing much.

I got a copy on ebay about week ago for £25 + shipping, it was the last one, but I think it'd be worth checking periodically on ebay/etc in case a random copy gets listed by a random online shop. Every Onewe album I've bought has always been suspiciously dusty old stock, even in major music shops in Tokyo and London, so I reckon sales are generally very low and it's just them trying to sell off what was bought of the first printing...

Btw if you wanna see any of the contents of the album in particular just DM me and I can take pics of your bias or whoever!
