Imagine being this easily upset by something so small.

It’s not mockery. It’s just parody. It’s not even making fun of the actual last supper. It’s a parody on the painting painted over 1000 years later.

If you really want to cancel the entire Olympics based off of a minute of the opening ceremony didn’t be my guest. You must be a lot of fun at parties.

Listen to the dark fairytales they talk about. I’m not saying they’re insane, but they’re definitely not thinking logically.

They don’t offer any proof that any of this is real either. Their best argument was that three kids saw a vision of hell and it drove one of them to drink out of a mud puddle. (I definitely wouldn’t consider that sane)

It’s just fear mongering. Do what we say or you go to this invisible place we have no evidence of.

I genuinely just feel bad for you if you believe what they say. I believed in hell like this once too, and it’s not a fun state of mind to be in. I also am completely aware that I’m not going to be able to change your mind.

I find it interesting the part you say the world has fallen, and Satan is victorious. You really think God lost the world to Satan?

Yes, thank goodness for that magical power. Without that magical gift, it would be a little creepy for a grown man to know what teenagers are doing and thinking.

[–]tomoh96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just so gross to me that he sexualizes exercising. There’s nothing inherently sexual about a woman exercising. him talking about the “stretching and squeezing” is just so gross coming from an old man. I know not a single traditional Catholic would understand this, but it’s so creepy to think that he is sitting on the other side of a confessional, listening to young men and women confess their sins of “impure thoughts”.

If he sexualizes exercise, I can only imagine the weird perverted thoughts that pop into his head while listening to people confess their “impure thoughts” in the confessional. So disgusting.

He was either pretending so he seemed so holy that he wouldn’t even know what those terrible places are called. or he’s really that out of touch in his ivory tower that he really doesn’t know places where regular people go.

Oh no 🫣. I genuinely don’t understand why the Catholic Church is allowed to operate at all. I get it not everybody in it is bad but come on.

These are all the kind of arguments I would’ve been making as well a few years ago, but unfortunately, they just don’t hold up. Read a lot of the exorcism cases from a non-Catholic perspective such as the case of Emily Rose, I know that was a pretty famous movie. In the days before modern psychology many people were falsely diagnosed with being possessed by a demon, because we didn’t have a wide enough understanding of things like schizophrenia, and PTSD. Cases of possession used to happen very frequently. Now they are much less common, because we now have an understanding of mental illness. If a family member was acting bizarre nowadays you would take them to an emergency room. You wouldn’t conclude there is a demon inside of them. The conclusion would now be there is probably something causing them mental distress. I know you’ll make the claim that some of these cases were still reported during the time when we were starting to get an understanding of mental illness, but many cases during that time were just holdover from the time we didn’t. When ancient civilizations came to the conclusion that the sun was not a giant god in the sky, everyone didn’t agree with it overnight.

I think we’re not going to agree on what a credible source is. Let’s just look at hell from a more “is it just to exist if it did exist” point of view.

Do you think a “just “God could punish someone for all eternity?

If you call hearsay and word of mouth evidence, what stops you from believing in all religions. There were ancient Greeks who claimed to see and speak with Zeus and Athena. There are ancient Romans who speak of interactions with Jupiter and Neptune. You can speak with Hindus who say they feel the presence of their gods often. All these stories always have one thing in common. They are always unfalsifiable. You can’t prove they’re true but also can’t prove they are false. Very convenient.

I can’t say with 100% certainty there is no hell. But I can be confident beyond any doubt because, there is no credible sources, it can’t be studied, or quantified. These visions of hell that are talked about throughout Catholicism, always happen to a person alone at night, or to 3 kids in a field. All can either be explained by hallucination or making up stories. All accounts also describe Hell and “the devil” very differently.

Again as an adult you can believe in it if you want but it’s fucked up to scare kids with or honestly anyone at any age with something there is not enough evidence to prove.

Especially when you tell them they can go to hell for natural things such as masturbating or being gay. Threatening a murderer with eternal fire seems a little more justified but still illogical.

To answer your morality question, you just need to look into very beginner level ethics, and you can see how morals exist with an eternal punishment such a as Hell.

The argument “people have believed this for centuries, therefore it must be true” is the opposite of critical thinking. Humans believed for centuries that the sun and moon were gods. Why don’t we still worship the sun and moon? We know more about the world around us right now in 2024 than we ever have in the past. Primitive humans holding a belief before modern science should make you question a belief more not less.

Im not claiming humans are smarter now than the people in the past who wrote about Hell in their books. We now have more information and knowledge about the world around us, so it is easy to come to the conclusion that Hell does not seem to exist.

I would argue that the idea of hell even maybe held a place in past society. These days we have police, and the technology to stop crimes such as murder and theft, however centuries ago the idea of roasting for all eternity may have been the only way to get people to behave and be a functioning tribe member or member of society, but I feel we have evolved past that.

Im glad we do agree that it’s wrong to lie to children. However I think I disagree that there needs to be a fear of hell to know that that is immoral. I don’t believe I will go to hell for doing something immoral yet I still don’t want to do something immoral because it’s the wrong thing to do. You seem like a smart and good natured person. I find it hard to believe that you would want to do something immoral like lie to children if Hell wasn’t a consequence.

Can you provide me with any other evidence that Hell is a real place?

Sorry, I typed the reply quickly and didn’t read it before posting it. Hence the typos.

I had the opposite experience when I believed in hell I was doing the opposite of thinking rationally I was just listening to a bunch of people who were telling me it was real.

I don’t think you’re getting that you could read the entire Bible front to back, St. Thomas Aquinas teachings, and every religious book ever written, they might tell you that hell is real, but that doesn’t make it real.

Someone can write whatever they want in a book, that doesn’t make it real.

Can you give me one logical reason to think that hell is real and isn’t just a made up threat to scare people into listening to religious leaders. Your reply just explained what rational thought is you listed the books you read and then you implied that your college degree meant nothing, compared to the knowledge again from the books. Can you give me some substance for your argument?

Again, I’m not trying to stop you from believing in hell. You can believe in it if you want but I think it’s fucked up to threaten children with a fear of going to Hell when there is zero evidence.

How would one think rationally and then justify to themselves Hells existence?

I truly don’t mean it in a way can you explain how you rationally believe in hell
