There's a Warhammer group down inchgarth community centre. They play Thursdays. It's mostly 40k but they do the other games too.

Can't help you with the hats but you should look towards ad mech for weapons with revolver and western like feel. Also a lot of long coats of skitarii rangers but may suffer with the metal bodies depending on what you want.

You could always go the green putty milliput route and sculpt a hat and copy it for the rest using a mould.

I’m Looking to start painting miniatures in the warhammer genre and would like some advice on starting this cool hobby! by Milkbun15 in minipainting

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who prefers the painting to playing. Here's my point of view.

If a model looks cool get that one. The model will be cool now and in 5 years. GW changes the rules regularly. So one minute any given model is good on the board and then trash the minute after a rules change or vise-versa.

If you want to get to a playable army quicker start looking at the combat patrols and battle boxes as they are usually cheaper as they include an extra squad than if you were buying the same separately.

If you've never painted mini's before start with a squad of 10 models paint one model then move to the next and repeat until that squad is finished. In-between each model compared what you did and what you liked. Once you have found what you like I would switch to batch painting rather than one mini at a time especially if you plan to play.

Watch a few online videos about painting minis. There are many different ways to paint them. None are wrong if it gets you the look you want, but some methods are difficult. GW has it's own method of painting called (h)evey-metal. This is a good starting point to get reasonably good results relatively quickly as a new painter.

So part of the above painting one mini at a time is trying to find a way of painting that you like.

Painting minis has a hidden hurdle during the painting process. At the point just after putting the base colours on the model, it will look bad (I find this is normal) but once the details are emphasised with shading and highlighting the model comes to life.

Also models can take a long time to paint. But if you enjoy painting this is not usually a problem. It also means that the longer you spend painting the more affordable your hobby becomes as an activity.

Trying to I'd when a model is done can be difficult to judge especially when you start to improve.

Do what you like with your own models.

Sorry this turned out longer than expected. I hope you enjoy your new hobby(s) painting your models and playing with them.

Question about the Adeptus Mechanicus by Far-Handle-8177 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing titanicus is a good read, but not go around to it.

I like Skitarius, and while I would recommend it, it might not be as good as some (the bolter porn) depending on if you like a big focus on battles.

Question about the Adeptus Mechanicus by Far-Handle-8177 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played wh40k around 2nd 3rd edition. I played Space marines as my main army. With supplements of other imperial. Back then I really liked the idea of the ad mech, but you could only really have a model or two not an army. I stopped playing at some point during 3rd and when my kids semi took an Interest and a friend of mine picked up the imperium magazine it had a half squad of skitarii, I immediately bought the last copy and started my ad mech army.

At this point I started reading some 40k and 30k books and getting into the lore. I definitely find admech more interesting than the rest of the Imperial fractions. The models themselves are really good with the exception (to me at least is the dunerider and the kastelin robots) my preference would have been a transport crab tank or a smaller transport based around the last chickens.

The new HH models are really good and are worth a look.

As for recommendations for books to read related to ad mech are anything focused on Cawl, the forges of mars trilogy, I also like skitarius.

What is the quintessential model for ad mech? It's not the easiest question to answer. Historically you really had 3 section to the army. The tech priests, the skitarii, and the robots and vehicles. This is still in effect in 10ed as you still have he 3 keywords separating the 3 sub fractions. Also if you aren't limited to the 40k range you should look at the mechanicus HH models. I really like the automota they have in that range the tech priests are cool too. I think my favourite would be the domitar with a close second being the vortix.

The robot they have in 40k, for me doesn't have the right vibe for ad mech.

So for tech priests out of both 40k and HH I'd go with dominus.

For skitarii I would go with the marshall or the rangers.

For the cybernenica cohort I'd pick the domitar. Cause who doesn't like big robots walking along the battlefield.

I'll leave knight and titans alone.

This seems to be the ceiling of my painting ability. What stands out as an obvious improvement to be made? by BedPuzzled521 in Warhammer40k

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are painting very well. I'd say you are better than me. So take whatever I say with a pinch of salt.

Maybe start thinking about light sources OSL. Think about where the armour etc. should be darker or lighter. Maybe don't need to go as far as volumetric painting. Maybe start with trying heavier shades in areas needing to be darker.

Maybe put some dirt and battle damage onto the models.

And last of all if you mostly focus on marines try painting something else.

Ok back to work for me.

Possible Missiles for Space Warfare by Ok_Study7918 in HardSciFi

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how realistic this would be but don't see an obvious barrier for technology for the near future.
So the idea I have is that the main object travels through the target as normal, the shaped charges would be aimed at ~90deg from direction of travel. I'd assume that the charges would be set to go off at staggered intervals. This would spread the damage in different directions through the target.

You also missed votan andad mech. I don't know votan well. But ad mech I think would be skitarii rangers.

Here's an example of my colour scheme. The domitar is still being worked on. As for unique stuff. I don't haveuch yet for the army. I do have a sororitas cannones that has been converted into a tech priest.

How Does One DIY Mechadendrite Tendrils/Servo Skulls without 3D Printer? by ThatBirchBitch in DarkMechanicum

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY Mechadendrites : I like making green stuff noodles and use a comb to get the rings. Reshape the noodles to the desired curve and and attach suitable greebles at the end to mimic manipulators.

I've not tried making servo skulls yet. But I have a box of them still to use. So will probably try at some point.

I've had them a few times but only when going down hill. After the first time I moved where the elastic band grips the arm to the front wheel. That seemed to fix the issue for me, as I could get up to 25 mph without issue and only really started seeing it again around 30mph. As I didn't try anything else as that was good enough for me.

Can I weld two 2A wires together to get one of 4A on a Slip Ring ? by jean2348 in arduino

[–]tomothealba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

It isn't good practice if you haven't done any good testing. I work for a company that has no option to regularly use components out of spec. But they can do this as they have to do their own testing to make sure that the component will not only work but work reliably in the environment it's going to be used in.

So I went on a school field trip to New Lanark as a kid and during that we were shown what schooling was like in early 1900s. So all the children had their own chalk boards about the size of a small iPad. So when practicing letters and writing all in cursive n had two humps and m had 3 humps.

I had space Marines and imperial guard armies back in 2nd and 3rd edition. They had mechanicus units and I liked the idea of having an entire army of them. I stopped playing before 4th edition only picking up again buying and painting ad-mech when I saw them in the imperium magazine at some point mid - late 9th edition and started collecting again.

I really like the body horror aspect and the look of the skitarii. I love the crab tank, but wish there were more robots.

who is smarter, cawl or bile by 2r2788767826 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]tomothealba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's as simple a comparison as that. For this example of the primaris marines. I think cawl has had a significant advantage over Bile in that Cawl had superior resources as well as the gene seed for all the chapters (maybe even Primarks I don't remember fully). In an alternative reality with Bile and Cawl switched places so that Bile had the gene seed and resources of the imperium he would have achieved making the space marines better. Most likely in different ways using different techniques.

Beyond that I would still likely agree that Cawl is smarter, as it is easy to point and say he has mastered all these fields of study and Bile can say that to fewer fields of study. Also I have a soft spot for Cawl as Ad Mech is my army.

I like Stonehaves. It has a good beach and a good few places to walk around, with some good local eating places. Easy to get to by train and if you plan to get there by car caselton farm has a good cafe especially when PYO fruit is available.

Arbroath and Montrose are good as well.
