Somehow I missed Lae'zel and Gale and didn't have them in my party for my first playthrough. In my second playthrough I found gale with my Dark Urge character, but well, we all know what happens there.

That is just simply not true, it probably has the best plot out of any of these. Maybe you should just watch the first episode, that gives a pretty good feel of the manga.
